Q: VLC isn't playing my dvd

So, I downloaded vlc onto my macbook pro and everything is fine, up until I try to play the actual dvd.

Every time I try to open the dvd, it sometimes says theres an error, or other times it'll show the explanation mark inside the yellow triangle (<---sorry, I don't know what its called).

I'm trying to play this dvd from a different region and I have heard that VLC is able to play dvds from all regions (mutli-region)

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

    Hi bangtanjmn,

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It looks like the VLC app isn't playing a DVD from a different region.

In this case, it's likely that the software is working fine and this is a result of the region encoding mechanism. You can find more information in DVD Player: About DVD-Video regions.

To briefly summarize this article--the DVD drive itself (SuperDrive or 3rd party external DVD drive) is typically locked to a region the first time you insert a DVD. After that, the drive will only play DVDs from that region.

Because of this, VLC may be working fine and it's the drive itself that doesn't play the disc.

Check out the link above for more details about how your MacBook Pro / SuperDrive handles region settings.

    Cheers.
