Promoting an iCloud alias to a full iCloud account

I made a decision a long time ago to create an alias on my MobileMe (now iCloud) email account. I never ended up using it but have always wanted to use it as a primary email account for a combined family email inbox. I see lots of Support Articles saying you can not promote an iCloud alias to a full iCloud account straight up, but I was curious if anyone ever had an alias they deleted and then sometime down the line were able to grab it again as a new iCloud account? I don't want to give up the alias if I have no chance of ever getting it back, but if there is a "not documented" time frame when an address goes from being deleted as an alias to then being "free" to pick up again in the future I would take that chance.

Thanks!
