Issues with Netflix on Apple TV 4

Hi,

I was just curious if anyone else was seeing issues with Netflix on the new Apple TV 4. Here are some issues I have seen so far.

  • Netflix randomly hangs on launch. Specifically happens when I select a User and then after that it will hand. My family has 4 users so usually I can get in under a different user, but once I have an issue with a user, then I need to log out of my netflix account and log back in and then it works.
  • Videos on Netflix keep pausing. We will be watching a show or movie and then randomly the video will pause like its buffering. I have to exit from that TV show or movie, then select a different video, then go back into the original video i was watching and it will usually work. But sometimes it only works for a few minutes and then happens again.
  • When I select a TV show and then select see more episodes, it will display the last episode as I was watching as Epsiode 1. For example, if I am on episode 5 of a show, the episode list will show 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 6. Usually after a few seconds it will change back to showing the correct episode.

I am not seeing these issues on my Apple TV 3 or on my Playstation 3. I realize this product is very new and the Netflix app is different than what was on the Apple TV 3, so I'm hoping these are just some early bugs that will get resolved. Most issues I can live with, but the randomly pausing video is starting to get pretty annoying.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

Hi,

After I posted this last night I ran a speed test on the Apple TV 4 and found the speeds to be low and fluctuating. So this seemed likely to be the reason for Netflix to be pausing while watching a video. I then restarted my router and still had the same issue. Then I did a reset on the Apply TV 4 and after that I was able to watch two TV shows with no pausing.

Hopefully that was the fix.

Thank you for your reply.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

Just an update to this. After resetting my Apple TV 4 I have not had any issues with my wifi being slow and video have played without issue. I do still experience the hanging on launch of netflix sometimes and I see there is at least one other user that has posted on these forums seeing the same thing. And I also experience the episode numbering issue still as well. On top of these I also have the issue of my Apple TV 4 and my TV turning on be themselves.

So a few bugs to work out still but at least my streaming issues seem to be resolved.

Thanks

Dave

I'm inclined to think you are suffering some sort of interference. What generally happens is that a restart cleans up but things start to get corrupt again shortly after, this continues until it becomes noticeable and things stop working properly, then another restart is required. The answer of course is not to keep restarting but find the source of the problem and put it right.

I have issues with Netflix hanging. Seems to happen for me after walking back in the flow with the "Menu" button. At some point I get to a screen where there is no content presented within the page area, just a spinning segmented circle indicating it's doing -something-. The only way I can fix this is to force quit the app (double click the Home button, swipe left/right to the Netflix app, swipe up to force quit it), and then start Netflix again.

I'm doubtful this is an interference issue... One of my 4th Gen Apple TV's is on a hardwired Ethernet connection, and it's only the Netflix app that's acting up in this, very specific, way. My money is on a application bug.
