Q: Issues with Netflix on Apple TV 4

Hi,

I was just curious if anyone else was seeing issues with Netflix on the new Apple TV 4. Here are some issues I have seen so far.

  • Netflix randomly hangs on launch. Specifically happens when I select a User and then after that it will hand. My family has 4 users so usually I can get in under a different user, but once I have an issue with a user, then I need to log out of my netflix account and log back in and then it works.
  • Videos on Netflix keep pausing. We will be watching a show or movie and then randomly the video will pause like its buffering. I have to exit from that TV show or movie, then select a different video, then go back into the original video i was watching and it will usually work. But sometimes it only works for a few minutes and then happens again.
  • When I select a TV show and then select see more episodes, it will display the last episode as I was watching as Epsiode 1. For example, if I am on episode 5 of a show, the episode list will show 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 6. Usually after a few seconds it will change back to showing the correct episode.

I am not seeing these issues on my Apple TV 3 or on my Playstation 3. I realize this product is very new and the Netflix app is different than what was on the Apple TV 3, so I'm hoping these are just some early bugs that will get resolved. Most issues I can live with, but the randomly pausing video is starting to get pretty annoying.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

I did the update. Did a speed test and speeds are lower than they should be. I haven't tried watching anything on netflix yet, but so far I feel this update did not fix my slow speeds. I'm sure I could reset again to bring the speeds back up, but I'm tired of doing that and having to re-download all of my apps.

Everything else in my house that is on wifi is rock solid except for this thing.

It seems that my issue is much worse after the update. My speeds are terribly slow and a reset of the Apple TV no longer fixes that issue. Half the time I can't get into Netflix and even when I can I can't stream video for more than a couple of minutes before the video hangs. I tried resetting and restoring the Apple TV but neither works. All other devices continue to work fine. I've reset my router several time but that hasn't helped. I'm at a loss and now have an unusable Apple TV 4. If I can't get this going in the next day or so I'm going to have to return it because it just doesn't work properly. This is by far the buggiest Apple product I have ever purchased.

Sorry Dave it's not the Apple TV. This particular model may be exposing issues with your network that the earlier model didn't but it's not causing them, until you accept this and go looking for your problem, it's likely just to stay that way.

I have been looking at my network as well. Ran the wireless diagnostics, looked at the settings and everything looks ok. I have made sure the Apple TV 4 is not in direct contact with any other electronics. It sits on the TV stand separated from the TV and has nothing else around it. Like I've mentioned before I reset my router and that has no fixed this. I have many other devices all on the same network including Apple TV 3, Playstation 3, iMac, MacBook Air, 4 x iPad's, 4 x iPhones and a Nest setup that includes a thermostat and smoke detectors. Everything else runs fine except for the Apple TV 4. I am seeing many others post about similar speed issues as well. This all seems like the Apple TV 4 to me.

A good control experiment would be to try using an Ethernet connection to the Apple TV and see if that improves your experience at all. If it does then you can narrow it down to a wireless issue.

One other thing to try, if you narrow it down to Wi-Fi, if your network supports it, try switching your Wi-Fi connection to a 5GHz type of network. It has shorter effective range than the traditional 2.4GHz setting but there is much less interference in this spectrum and often leads to a much better experience for all devices that connect at the 5GHz frequency. Cheers

Believe me you are seeing very few, it's quite obvious when there is an issue that can be attributed to the Apple TV itself, there are hundreds of posts in quick succession with thousands of views and hundreds of me too's, what you are doing is visiting the doctors, seeing a couple of people sneeze and assuming the whole world is ill.

To an extent, but ethernet cables can experience interference as well you know, not from other wifi networks but from electro magnetic induction from nearby cables. Ethernet also doesn't eliminate incorrect network settings in the router itself or software on other devices using the same network. Additionally if any part of the network uses wifi, interference from there can affect other parts of the network too.

I've been having the same troubles with my new Apple TV. Netflix, Hulu, Plex, Home Sharing. Anything that uses network will work great for an hour or so then just stop. Since I have System Prefs as the first app, it's pretty quick to get to the restart menu. I've tried relocating the Apple TV, I've boosted the power on my Airport Extreme, I've forced 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The only solution is running an ethernet cable across the floor.

    Thanks for posting this.

    Hi,

Fortunately I have not had any issues for the past week or so. Netflix will crash the odd time when switching users, but that isn't happening often. And when I go to log back, it goes in right away. I have not had to sign out and sign in again. My streaming issues are also better. I haven't had any videos pause on me at all. Speed tests on the Apple TV are also good. I did not change anything on the Apple TV and I did not change anything on my network. So I'm not sure what changed to fix it, but I'm glad it's working much better now.

    Thanks

    Dave

For future reference (and for others coming across this thread) the first thing to check when you're having wireless problems is your wireless performance by switching to a wired connection.  This is always the first thing to do no matter what is happening with the rest of your equipment.

If you have a system you can use as an Air Video HD server then the Air Video HD client provides a speed/latency tester and Speedtest is recently accurate but unfortunately if your ISP doesn't run a server it can be less helpful than it should.

    I have a nominal 30 Mb/s connection (actual 36Mb) to my ISP.

    Speedtest reports 36 Mb/s on 802.11ac.

AV HD reports 190 Mb/s on 802.11ac (Mac server) versus 80 MB/s wired.

    802.11g peaks at 16 Mb/s.

WiFi Explorer is also a handy visualizer for the Mac.

    Hi!

I´m experiencing the same issue with a brand new Apple TV4, this is hooked via ethernet to a 25 Mbps D / 3 Mbps U, very tested and stable connection.

It replaced an Apple TV 3, which now sits on a different TV set on the same house, however, this time it works via wifi (same router), and experiences no issues whatsoever.

The ATV4 dowloaded the update that became available two days ago. Same problem :/

I am having another issue with Netflix and Apple TV 4.  I can not connect at all, got the dreaded 108 error, followed everything suggested by Netflix support.  They suggested I contact Apple and said I need an update, yet I am running the most current update 9.1 (13U85)  Only affects Netflix and the Apple TV 4, which is connected directly to the router with an ethernet cable.   Apple TV 3 works fine.  All other devices, computers, iphones and ipads can access netflix just fine.  I suspect they have made some change to the way the Netflix App for the Apple TV 4 connects to Netflix.  I suspect my problem has to do with my network configuration.  I am using a Netgear R4500 connecting through a centurylink C1000Z using PPOE with Bridge mode.  All my other devices function without issues, including several remote cameras, an Insteon Hub, several RDP workstations and X10 automation.  I verified the network issue by turning my iphone into a personal hotspot and using that for my network connection, Then I am able to connect to netflix, back to ethernet- no 108 error.  I have also tried running wireless to the netgear router, no love.  Does anyone have any technical information as to how the new Netflix App used on an apple TV 4 connects to Netflix?  Any info would be appreciated.

Also note since my upgrade to 9.1 and re-installation of the netflix app (They updated the app recently)  I no longer get the 108 error, but just a generic message saying if you need help connecting to go to the netflix website www.netflix.com/LoginHelp.

I don't see any substantive difference although the ATV4gen prefers IPv6 and takes longer to get to the maximum bitrate under congestion.  Now is not a good time for performance testing for me (New York State) at the moment since I'm getting content from LAX/SJC rather than NYC.

Bingo!!! your a lifesaver.  Never dawned on me that it might be using IPv6.  My router has a very odd configuration for PPPoE and IPv6  Played with the IPv6 settings, turned off IPv6 and boom Netflix here we come.  I will have to mess with the settings some more to see if I can get IPv6 working on the router with Netflix, but for now at least I am in business.     Thanks Again !!!

I've been having the same issue. Just got the ATV4 yesterday.  Netflix kept buffering and pausing.  Speedtest showed good speeds.  All other apps appeared to be working well (Hulu, HBO Go).  Plus netflix was working fine on my xbox one without issues.  Just read the last few posts, changed router setting to IPV4, and all is good so far.  Will update if anything changes, but can tell it is already working faster.

Quick question though.  Will changing the router to IPV4 affect performance of my network in any other way?  I just don't want speed to be dampened somewhere else.

    Thanks for the help!!
