The phone does need to be activated, but not activated to Sprint, that is why you can use a non-active SIM, it just has to match he device if it is locked to a carrier, and cannot be a blocked SIM.

Nov 6, 2015 6:25 PM in response to ChrisJ4203by anarnold22,its a sprint sim and i understand about that part of it. Like I said I have been using it for a year as an iPod with no issues. Only after I updated with iOS 9 did this happen.

Nov 9, 2015 2:21 PM in response to anarnold22by anarnold22,I bought a SIM off of ebay so I could use it. I see the "no signal" message at the top of the screen, where before I upgraded it usually said 1x and had the bars of service. So maybe it does have something to do with it. I am determined to figure it out, lol. I don't know why I upgraded it anyways, I mostly just listen to my playlists in the car with it.

Nov 9, 2015 2:54 PM in response to anarnold22by ChrisJ4203,So I've gone back and read everything you wrote before, you say that Sprint is the carrier the phone is locked to, but you don't have Sprint service available where you are? Are you connected to Wi-Fi with the device when you attempt this activation? You have to be connected to one or the other to complete the activation. Make sure your home Wi-Fi is available, and when you activate the device, the sign-in to Wi-Fi is one of the first steps. You may have to erase the device and try starting over again.
