Q: iOS 9 update ruined my iPhone!

I have been using an old iPhone 5c as an iPod for my music and iBooks for about a year now. I recently downloaded the iOS 9 update. It asked for my Apple ID and password. I entered it but it doesn't do anything. Then it will go to my home screen and then go back to the activation screen. It still has the SIM card and I have wifi.  It does the same thing when I connect it to iTunes. It says the server is temporarily unavailable. It's been that way for two days!! Do I have a useless paperweight now? It cannot be activated as a phone since it's locked to Sprint and sprint is not a carrier in my neck of the woods!! Help!!

iPhone 5c, iOS 7.0.4

What SIM is in the device? You do not need an active one, but if the device is locked to Sprint, it has to be a Sprint SIM. The phone does need to be activated, but not activated to Sprint, that is why you can use a non-active SIM, it just has to match he device if it is locked to a carrier, and cannot be a blocked SIM.

its a sprint sim and i understand about that part of it.  Like I said I have been using it for a year as an iPod with no issues. Only after I updated with iOS 9 did this happen.

So you are saying there is nothing wrong with the SIM? See if anything in this support document helps. If you can't activate your iPhone - Apple Support

Many times that error can be indicative of a jailbroken device, or a computer that has been used to jailbreak a phone.

I bought a SIM off of ebay so I could use it.  I see the "no signal" message at the top of the screen, where before I upgraded it usually said 1x and had the bars of service. So maybe it does have something to do with it.  I am determined to figure it out, lol. I don't know why I upgraded it anyways, I mostly just listen to my playlists in the car with it.

So I've gone back and read everything you wrote before, you say that Sprint is the carrier the phone is locked to, but you don't have Sprint service available where you are? Are you connected to Wi-Fi with the device when you attempt this activation? You have to be connected to one or the other to complete the activation. Make sure your home Wi-Fi is available, and when you activate the device, the sign-in to Wi-Fi is one of the first steps. You may have to erase the device and try starting over again.
