How do I fix crashing white screen email app?

My iPad 2 email app crashed a few days ago while trying to forward a very large file. Since then the email app will not run. When I start it it opens a white screen, then closes to home page after about 15 seconds. I've done the restart and hard reboot with no change. Running OS 8.4. I've seen a couple other questions with different apps, like News, doing the same thing, but no guidance on a fix. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

iPad 2, iOS 8.4

Hello sodypop2,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that Mail on your iPad is not opening as you would expect after it unexpectedly closed when forwarding a large file. Restarting and force restarting your iPad are both good troubleshooting steps, but it seems like this had no effect on the situation.

One step that I would recommend that you may not have completed is to force the Mail app to close completely before restarting. To quit the Mail application, follow the steps in the following article.

Force an app to close in iOS - Apple Support

After Mail has been closed, restart your iPad again as outlined in the next article.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Once your iPad boots back on, open the Mail app as you normally would and test it to make sure it is working as expected.

Cheers!

Hi sodypop2,

Thanks for replying with all of this extra information! Because I think this Mail issue may need some more troubleshooting to isolate the issue, you may want to contact AppleCare directly. Contacting Apple Support will allow us to really get a complete picture of this situation and provide you the best support possible.

HI Joe,

Thanks for your interest and advice. It's taken a few days to get back to you on this because I had some traveling to do in the middle of this problem.

i did force quit all applications prior to doing both restarts. I have tried a number of other things suggested in older posts here and at other sites including deleting all emails up to and including the day on which the first crash occurred, then deleting my email account and doing a forced restart before adding my email account back. I have also deleted all sent files, draft files and in box files at the web server. I Cannot see my iOS email folders to delete anything there, so it is possible there is a file remeanent causing the issue, but I doubt it. Deleting the files at the server should have also removed them from my iPad. I tried activating airplane mode as suggested under some older iOS systems to remove files, apparently with some success. Don't exactly understand how that was accomplished since activating airplane mode disconnects any wi-fi connection which then makes it impossible to see email files and folders.

IT seems to me that this app is crashing when it finds the server of my ISP. It can't be an email on the server because I have deleted them all. Not just put them in the trash, but deleted them. A number of users with a similar problem were able to fix it by finding and deleting a specific email. The email copy I was forwarding could not be found, although the original email I received was intact. I made a copy of that email and stored it as a file on my cloud drive and then deleted it.

interestingly, in deleting and reinstalling my email account connection to the ISP server there was an instance when I incorrectly entered my password. After closing the notification box, the connection procedure changed. I found that if you enter your password Correctly the first time, you have completed the install procedure and usually need to do nothing more. If you must re-enter your password due to a mistake, the connection procedure changes, new boxes appear, and you must enter your password once for the incoming mail and again for outgoing mail. You can also invoke SSL or not, and you can see and change port numbers. Normally you have no way to access and verify this data, and checking port numbers is sometimes important. I needed to see port numbers because I felt the app was crashing due to an inability to connect to the server and incorrect port numbers would cause such a problem.

So, I think I'm going to have to reload my OS in order to fix this email app. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I don't think a full reset will fix this. Is there a place to download an 8.4 OS from Apple? I assume this is possible. Can it be done without having to do additional backups and restore procedures? I could up grade to 9.1, but really don't want to yet as there are still many problems with it and my 8.4 system has been very stable from the start.

thanks for any thoughts you have on what I've said.

HI again,

I know this has gotten a bit long, but I for got to make one point. I know that my in house wi-fi is working with the email program and that it does find the server because the server is seeing and approving (or dis-approving, as the case may be) my password. Not exactly sure how that works at the server end, but I am getting that far.

HHello again Joe,

thanks for the info above. What I'd like to do is send somebody at Apple Support a link to this forum thread so I don't have to re-explain the entire thing. Can you tell me how and to whom I should direct this info. Of course I'd write an informative intro to the problem and provide the link for details.

Now here's the real most interesting thing: Since my last post I have tried a number of things trying to find the problem preventing server access. Nothing I did worked, but during this process I tried to activate the app perhaps a half dozen times. Yesterday, I picked up my iPad with the intention of looking at my email from the browser connected to the ISP. Force of habit caused me to launch the email app. Viola, the app opened in stead of crashing. It opened to the very email I had been trying to forward when the crash occurred. I then deleted the forward draft document as well as the original 11mg email. I then examined the folders and files I had before the crash and everything was in order. My email is restored. Go figure.
