It sounds like you are trying to use your TV as an external display but it is not working. I would start by using the troubleshooting for external monitors in the following article:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201177
- Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
- If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
- Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
- If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
- Start up in Safe Mode.
- From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
- Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
- Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
- Restart your computer.
That should troubleshoot the mac side of the equation to help you isolate the issue if you need to reach out to the support team for your TV
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Nov 8, 2015 12:24 PM in response to sterling rby drjoanny,Thanks for your reply.
After some time trying different things out. I went to a different older large screen Samsung TV (circa 2009) we have and tried mirroring there. The only option I had there was to SELECT the HDMI port that my cable was connected to! So I did that and got mirroring to work there.
Then I went back to my newer Samsung TV and did the same thing - problem solved! The simple solution was in front of me all that time and it worked! My laptop screen appeared right away.
Thanks for taking the time for replying!
