I have my sidebar set to Show Page Thumbnails. If I quit Pages, and then reopen the document, the thumbnails are blank. If I toggle the sidebar setting to Hide Page Thumbnails, and then to Show Page Thumbnails, then the preview images appear. Is there a way to make this work, or is this a bug?
iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11)
I am experiencing the exact same thing. It started after I upgraded my OS X to El Capitan 10.11.1 which I am starting to regret. (Google Chrome also seems a little bit flaky after the upgrade.)
I contacted support about this and they responded very quickly. The Pages support expert shared my screen and confirmed the problem. He then had me create a new user account for my computer and under that "person" access the file and the thumbnails were fine so he said the problem is connected to the specific user account logged into the computer. He is documenting all of this and sending it on to another support department. So we will see where this leads to.

I get the same thing occasionally. I can "fix" it by closing the thumbnail view (on the View menu), and then re-opening it.
I did a followup with the Apple technical support people and they seem to be stumped on this - at least the part of support that works with Pages did not have a fix for me. They asked me to report it to the El Capitan people through "product feedback" and said that all of the feedback that they receive really is looked at and taken seriously. I'm not going to "hold my breath" but I will say that Apple's support team has been a lot better than any experience that I have had trying to get help from Microsoft in the past!
I just sent feedback. I wish the support folks could take care of the bug report when we contact them to get help. You would think that would be more direct.
Fixed with 5.6.1 update today.
I just downloaded and installed the update, but I still have the problem with the thumbnails (and it's still resolved with my original workaround).
Sorry, I spoke too soon. It worked twice, now it's dead again.
I tried a few more time and it's working again.

Same problem here. Going to view and "hide thumbnails" then turning back on does work for me. Still annoying nonetheless.

By the way option + command + P opens and closes the thumbnail view.
It will also show my thumbnails if I save the edited document <cmd S>
Downloaded the latest OS update and the latest Pages, and the issue of blank thumbnails is still a problem. Closing and re-opening them fixes this, but it is annoying.
