How to join split audio clips

Hi

I've got a bunch of split audio clips (removing snippets of wind noise). I really need to rejoin all these clips, or continued editing will get really cumbersome (I don't want any gaps in the audio, right now I have to go through the movie and drag all the split clips together every time I cut something out)

I have two audio clips selected, go to modify, and "join clips" is greyed out (see screenshot).

Stumped. Any thoughts?

You can only join clips that were previously split (and with nothing missing at the join). A better approach is not to split the audio clip at all but to select a range in the region of each bit you want to mute and lower the volume in this region. It works both for attached audio and separate audio tracks.

From searching around, I'm thinking imovie doesn't do what I'm trying to do with it. If you remove, say, a middle portion of an audio (or video) clip, you can't rejoin the two remaining parts of the clip back into a single clip. Correct?

I have to snip out a bunch of brief bits from a 10-min audio section. Guess I'll just deal with it and slide all the remaining pieces back into a continuous flow when I'm done snipping. Or maybe start at the end of the movie and work my way backwards.

Thanks. Yes, I was just starting to look into selecting a region instead of splitting. However, lowering the volume is not the effect I'm looking for. I have ambient background sound and want it to be continuous. I'm just getting rid of many bits in the continuous flow that have egregious wind-popping sound (I know, I just ordered a windscreen).

So if I select regions of audio and "cut" many sections, will I have the same problem I have now, with non-joinable sections? Again, it's just the inconvenience of having to drag all the remaining bits together that I'm concerned with.
