Q: Malware on mac

Hey I was streaming and accidentally clicked something I shouldn't have.

Now every time I try to open a tab or click on a link, I'm bombarded with pop-ups.

The only way I can avoid this is by right clicking and choosing "open in new tab"

I went through all my apps and deleted the one that looked suspicious and emptied the junk folder.

What else can I do to fix this?

I'm running OSX El Capitan version 10.11.1

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010)

    Yesproductions,

The link mentioned by Niel is very helpful to stop pop-up ads and other malware in Safari web-browser. Alternatively, you can also use AdwareMedic software to scan and remove malware from your iMac. Hope, it will help you to solve your problem.

AdwareMedic is now called MalwareBytes.  So we're all talking about the same app by Thomas Reed.

Unfortunately you now have to also be careful about downloading software updates. Softonic and cnet are well known as sites to avoid, but now MacUpdate has to be added to the list. It's safest to download from the App Store or directly from the developer's site.

Even then caution is warranted. I was recently looking for the free version of AVG for a Windows 7 VM, and the only download link for it that I could find on AVG's own site was to CNET. Really shabby behavior on AVG's part.

What does this have to do with downloading MBAM to check for adware? I don't see this slightest connection. It's not coming from any download site.

I don't think kahjot was referring to MalwareBytes, it was just a general note of caution on how to prevent infections going forward.

Thanks everyone for the great feedback!

I ended up using Malwarebytes. Found a bunch of malware so it was definitely useful. Also, It was quick, easy and fixed the issues I was having.

Glad to hear everything is sorted out! As you are now one of the few on this site who actually know anything about how to deal with a malware infection, I hope you'll share your knowledge with others. The site badly needs more people who think like you to give advice.
