Q: MBP 17-in ramdom shutdown. GPU heatsink 30-128 degree Celsius

Hi All

I have a very old great condition Macbook Pro 17-inch (MacbookPro2,1 2.33GHz) which was not used for about 3-4 years because of bad LCD. It was in a drawer, hidden for long time.

I recently fixed the LCD and it works fine except a problem "Random Shutdown"

For checking overheating problem or not, I installed iStat Menu program to see different temperatures and found GPU heatsink temp is 128 degree Celcius

(Approx 262 degree F). I observed that sometimes it comes down from 128 -> 40 -> 30 -> 1 and then shoots up to 128 back making flu 6000 RPM on the Fan

If my FAN is max from beginning, the Random shutdowns are much less.

I recently upgraded memory to 4GB and ran memtest program for testing. It was a very heavy load testing, and the MBP was perfectly fine.

Another problem is, when the MBP is shutdown normally/random , next power-on does not happen with or without main power plugged in … if I press power button for 5 seconds , then it starts without any problems.

Is this normal ? what could be the reason? Check the pics

Reset the SMC and the NVRAM:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

Run an Apple hardware Test.  Use the disk that came with the MBP that has the instructions for the AHT written on it.

    Ciao.

    Hi Oglethorpe,

Thanks for the response. I have tried all resets available the Mac many times. PRAM/NVRAM, SMC.

If I remove battery for few mins and then start the MBP, I also the date resets to year 2000… that indicate CMOS battery as well.

Regarding the AHT, the MBP came with Tiger Disk but I do not have it available and currently using Lion 10.7.5 on this machine.

Is there a way I can get the Tiger installer image ?

    Thanks

Download the appropriate AHT from here:

    https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest

I am suspicious of the 128°c temperature reading.  Download Bresink Temperature Monitor from here:

    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html

See if it develops the same statistics.  (It may not be supported anymore, but it should work)

    Ciao.

Thanks for the details. Before I shutdown my MBP for AHT, I wanted to update you on the Temperature Monitor program output.

It goes get temp reading around 127 degree Celsius for Graphics hear sink.

Check pic .. Any suggestions ?

All of the other temperatures look very normal.  Compare this to my late 2011 17" MBP:

Lets see if the AHT shows anything and what the Bresink Temperature Monitor shows.

    Ciao.

I got the AHT outcome. That shows one error

    4SNS/1/40000000: TG0H

That is a GPU Temperature sensor error.  You can make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and they will probably confirm the diagnosis.  Since your MBP is 'old' by Apple standards, they probably will not offer to repair it.  You will have to find a third party to do the repair.

I have doubts about the accuracy of the 127°c temperature, but the sensor error has probably set the fans at the default maximum rpm.

    Ciao.

From What I read on this error, seems like either the Temperature sensor is disconnected or gone bad for GPU Temperature.

And FAN would run on full speed if sensor disconnected ... mine does run full speed.

Question is, when it comes out of sleep mode, MBP does not have FAN's at full speed at that moment, and shutdown immediately.

Ok, so if the sensor is disconnected and FAN runs at full speed, why the MBP shuts down? what triggers it ?

How does replacing or fixing connection of the sensor fix this issue ? (if it does)

That indicates a Sensor error. The GPU heatsink sensor may be disconnected or failed.

Without proper input from all the sensors, Your Mac may have difficulty determining the correct fan speeds. It usually errs on the side of higher fan speeds to try to compensate. But when it is that high, your Mac may decide it is on fire and need to take protective action and shut down.

Yes, I found same on this error. Can you check my inputs that I wrong (probably same time as your post) ?

I am comfortable in opening the MBP and logic board as well ... so I will surely check it out.

Thank you very much for the guidance so far.

These are the questions that you should ask the technicians at the Apple store genius bar.  I freely admit that I am not that well versed in this technical minutia.

    Ciao.

I appreciate all the help. Do you by any chance know where is the connector for the TG0H sensor ?

I believe there are a lot of them on the board.

No I do not.    Yes there a number of them and I can only occasionally determine/guess what they are for.  I have gone inside all of my MBPs many times, but I am not in the 'expert' class.

    Ciao.

You'd better make Genius Bar appointment and ask them about your problem.
