CD stuck inside the optical drive

A CD is stuck inside the optical disc drive of my MacBook Pro (Mid-2012). It reads the disc and plays its contents just fine. However, whenever I try to eject the disc, the optical drive makes some sounds and the disc icon disappears from Finder, but the disc doesn't actually come out of the drive and it starts reading the disc again. I'm basically stuck in a loop.

The problem started after I played a different audio CD. When I played the CD, there was a lot of distortion in the sound. I ejected the CD and tried inserting another disc, but there seemed to be a blockage and I could not insert the disc. I entered the command 'drutil eject' in Terminal, and I was able to insert the disc. The disc is playing just fine, but I haven't been able to get it out since then.

I've tried these methods:

  • pressing the eject key
  • ejecting from iTunes, Finder and Disk Utility
  • using the Terminal command 'drutil eject'
  • holding the option key while restarting and pressing the eject button on startup disk selection screen
  • holding the trackpad while booting
  • resetting SMC

but nothing has worked so far.

I'd greatly appreciate any help.
