How do I create a long fade-to-black clip?

Fade-to-black transition will only work when I insert a black slide after the the transition but that adds time to the movie that I don't want. A black cutaway slide inserted above the clip has buttons for a fade out-then-in but they don't move independently. I don't want the clip to fade in again. Any work-arounds?i

You don't need to add a black clip but you do need to trim back the last clip (if it is video) by at least as much time as you want the fade to black to last (since there has to be video available during the whole of the fade duration). Add the fade to black transition at the end then double click it. A window will show allowing you to set a longer duration. Click Apply.
