apple Mini ipad unavailable

I just bought a mini ipad and was logged in. I downloaded the latest OS update and then it wouldn't let me log in. I found that someone had hacked my email on google the one i use for the apple id address so may have changed the password. It now says the ipad is unavailable and to log into itunes. However when I connect via a cable on my laptop and try and sign into itunes attached to the ipad it says it cannot be done as i have to enter the password on the mini ipad. I have since changed my apple email address and new password and it still says to log via itunes,but it will not let me. I assumed that by changing the email that was hacked and the password on the main apple site online it should correct things,but it hasn't. so I still cannot use the ipad. Please help.
