I am running an older operating system (10.6.8) on older machines (Core 2 duos). Recently, I have begun to receive advertisements to upgrade to el Capitan. I'm not ready to do so, but I don't know how to stop them. I've tried Software Update

I get those pop ups too, though not that often; twice in the last ten days or so. I just X them out and forget. Apple doesn't want us to continue on Snow Leopard, though heaven knows why. SL is better than all the new ones from what I see.
It happened because you ran the Mac App Store updater at some point. Those that don't never see the popups.
I don't remember doing that, AB. I did have to do a Combo update a couple of months ago because I had a problem to resolve ... do you see that as one and the same thing?

What is the Software Update interval set to? That should affect it more than the combo update.
My last three recorded updates were Safari 15.05.2015 and 22.11.2014. interspaced by a combo update that I did to resolve a problem. The Check for Updates box is unchecked, largely because we have been led to believe that Snow Leopard would not receive any more.
But I did accept a Mac App Store update on the 14th of March 2014. Guess that's the one AB had in mind.

HAs anyone figured out a way to shut this off? It really annoys me.
If you have done the same App store update as I referred to earlier, then probably not. I think they put a sleeper in with it which wakes up and pesters us now and then. To be honest Its appearance is so rare and so easy to get rid of that it doesn't trouble me.
