Q: Random Freezing and White Screen
Hi
I'm after some advise - I am not a Mac user - I'm looking at my father's IMac I5 2011, all of a sudden after years of good service it has started freezing and when booting up presents a white screen. I've managed a few time to actually get it up and running but after a while (running virus checks etc) it will freeze and once rebooted return to the white screen.
The fix I've tried seems to have intermittent success
PRAM reset
SMC reset
SUM - /sbin/fsck -fy, /sbin mount -uw / (I'm typing these from memory)
I've also run the command -repair_packages --repair --standardpkgs which does find a lot of errors and repairs them but if I run again it finds the same errors.
I can repeat all of the above and then all of a sudden it will work ok
Booting of the install DVD doesn't work - the disk he has is 10.6.7 and but has 10.6.8 installed on the mac. Internet recovery doesn't work because it is Snow Leopard?
The last time I got it up and running I thought I would use time machine to go back to an earlier date when it was issue free but it froze?
I've run the advanced diags but it comes back ok.
Any thoughts? Hardware?
Thanks in advance
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
