Q: Failing video card

My husband and I flew United Airlines last week with my Macbook Pro.  When we landed at our destination for the week, I pulled my computer out and booted it up.  The video was very herky-jerky for about 5 minutes but finally settled down and I was able to use it.  We then flew back and I have the same situation; however, it seems to be continuing instead of stopping.  I've booted it twice and I am unable to use it.  Can the airport scanners cause damage to the video card/chip?  Can it be repaired?  What to do now?  Also, I haven't time machined my computer in quite some time (my bad, I know).  Any thoughts on this?  The screen is flickering enough, I can't even try to find the mouse to try to run a backup so I doubt anything else "diagnostic" could be done either.  Thanks in advance!
