Imovie 11 crashes with OS El Capitan

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011), Processor 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB, OS X El Capitan 10.11.1.

Imovie 11 crashes at random when trying to add a transition, text, importing a movie, etc..

It is enough frustration that the beachball is now ever present everywhere and that I can't even open Google Chrome since I've upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.1, now I cannot edit video which is what I mainly use the Mac for.

I can't uninstall Imovie since I have many unfinished projects that I can't lose.

Please advise.

Does the problem persist if you create a new iMovie Library and open just that one? You can create a new library (and leaving your previous library intact) by holding down the Alt key when launching iMovie, and chose New… from the dialogue.
iMovie 10.1 has issues with OS X El Capitan, but those crashes suppose some media incompatibility or corruption. You should try a project in a new, empty library, and check whether it is a library problem or a system bug.
(Uninstall obviously won't solve the issue. The iMovie.app itself could not be source of the problem.)

p.s.: You can open your old library after testing from File > Open Library… Feel free to test.

So I just deleted my whole Imovies Projects folder as I read on the internet this would fix it.

I restarted Imovie and opened a new project, imported the movie and was going to try to add text/title and just by scrolling down the title browser before I could even choose one it crashed:

The issue seems to have something to do with the Titles browser, I can't scroll down on it or it crashes and If I select any of the first ones without scrolling and I drag and drop it on the project it crashes.

I've deleted my projects folder and started from scratch and I have deleted the Far Far Away title that was causing trouble in other versions as per another thread and the problem still persists.

Please help.

Now I tried this:

Delete iMovie pref. file

iMovie pref. file resides.

Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences

and is named. (one or more of these)

com.apple.iMovie.plist

com.apple.iMovie3.plist

com.apple.iMovie7.plist

com.apple.iMovie8.plist

com.apple.iMovie9.plist

com.apple.iMovieApp.plist

and find

com.apple.iApps.plist

While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.

Now restart iMovie.

If You run Mac OS X.7 or more - then the Library in the User-account folder is invisibly and need to be set to be viewable. IT IS NOT in the Library on Root level (when opening MacintoshHD - first window = root level)

( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter: chflags nohidden ~/Library

Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )

-------------------------

Still crashing when trying to add a title. 😕

I also have this issue, imovie 11 9.0.9 crashes when trying to insert text to clips. Started after El Capitan.

I'll start a different thread but thumbnails in both imovie and aperture are upside down...

Nov 10, 2015 8:00 AM in response to Semantics

Hi Semantics, as I was analyzing if I should move to final cut pro (I really need to resume my video editing activities), I researched and found that people are also having problems with FCP crashing when upgrading to El Capitan. Turns out they solved it by re-installing their NVIDIA GeForce Graphics driver, which made me suspect that this could be driver-related. So I did some research and apparently my graphics driver is not optimal/compatible for El Capitan, Source: http://www.everymac.com/mac-answers/os-x-el-capitan-faq/os-x-el-capitan-compatib le-macs-system-requirements.html I have Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB and apparently Intel HD Graphics 4000 or newer are required.

So my question to you is: Can you check which graphics card you have and is it listed on that link as compatible with El Capitan?

Do you think this could be related to the graphics driver and if so, what can we do to solve it? Revert the OS upgrade? 😕 😠 😟
