Q: Imovie 11 crashes with OS El Capitan

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011), Processor 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5, Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB, OS X El Capitan 10.11.1.

Imovie 11 crashes at random when trying to add a transition, text, importing a movie, etc..

It is enough frustration that the beachball is now ever present everywhere and that I can't even open Google Chrome since I've upgraded to El Capitan 10.11.1, now I cannot edit video which is what I mainly use the Mac for.

I can't uninstall Imovie since I have many unfinished projects that I can't lose.

Please advise.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Hi Rich, thanks for your reply.

But my late 2011 MacBook is now useless after the El Capitan update, as in it is only a piece of metal. Everything takes ages to load, I´m talking about 10-30 minutes to open an app. Beachball everywhere.

Furthermore, I can´t update to Imovie 10 because I get update failed and install failed error messages. I even put Imovie 9 in the trash to make a fresh install from the appstore but it won´t install.

I have not been able to use my Mac since I update to El Capitan and have tried everything. I even opened it up and cleaned it, disconnected the battery, etc.. I went from a fully functional Macbook Pro to a piece of metal from where I have half of my life and I can´t even recover the files since Iphoto doesn´t work either and my Mac now does not recognize my external hd memories so I can´t save up my videos.

I am disgusted by Apple and by this forced obsolescence and I am already looking at other companies´offerings to get a new machine.

realityisa, Sorry you are having so much trouble. This discussion was started as a problem with iMovie 11 (version 9) and El Capitan. You obviously have problems with El Capitan so the problem with either iMovie 11 or 10 (version 10) are secondary.

You are not alone with the El Capitan running slowly problem. But be aware that there are fixes and they are not the fault of Apple. Most come down to software that introduces problems into the operating system. Have you checked out the discussion on "El Capitan running slowly?" I was able to solve my "running slowly" problem with 2 of the suggestions in that discussion. A lot to read but very helpful.

apoplexy, Again, this discussion was started as a problem with iMovie 11 (version 9) and El Capitan. There may be discussions on iMovie 10 problems out there but I have only been running 10 for a few days. You indicated that you have been searching for answers. I will also do a little searching and get back to you. But your issue should probably me moved to a discussion on iMovie 10 and El Capitan.

I didn't want to move up to 10 as I love the interface of v9. But I will make a few suggestions.

I had the same problem on one movie. But I was able to "Force Quit", re-open and things went fine from there.

Have you been able to make even a very short movie? Does your system seem to be running properly outside of iMovie? iMovie is a pretty heavy app in that it requires a lot of power to run. I always make sure I have very little running while using iMovie, i.e maybe 1 or 2 other apps.

I'll spend the day searching and get back to you on another discussion.

Ok. will search other avenues or stop using this application.  Right now iMovie will not open and stops responding. So, I can't use this app to create movies.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me. I'm running iMovie 11 v10.1 and even something as simple as starting and then immediately quitting will result in a SIGSEGV:

First off, be aware that iMovie 11 is actually version 9. The latest update to that version is 9.0.9. And it WILL NOT RUN PROPERLY in El Capitan.

If you are indeed running iMovie v10 you should probably switch your comments and problems to a discussion of problems with that combination.

The problems in your SIGSEGV are a bit confusing. I don't know what a SIGSEGV is but reading through it tells me there is something wrong with your system. The line, "12/13/15 12:51:49.604 PM iMovie[9815]: WARNING: The Gestalt selector gestaltSystemVersion is returning 10.9.2 instead of 10.11.2. " would indicate to me that those are OS numbers. As El Capitan is OS 10.11.2 (the latest). So if your system is expecting 10.11.2 and getting 10.9.2 I would blame the system not iMovie.

Probably not much help, but see if someone on one of the discussions with iMovie v10 and El Capitan can help you.

Rich, please read what I wrote - I am NOT running iMovie 9, I am running v10.1 - which is what I said in my comment.

As for not knowing what a segv is, well, I >do< know, I've been a software engineer for more than 30 years now. This is NOT an OS problem. The error message you highlighted indicates that iMovie is still using an obsolete software interface that hasn't been supported since 10.9. Heck, If I remember correctly, Apple declared the entire "Carbon" interface obsolete a few years back.

    You wrote

Rich, please read what I wrote - I am NOT running iMovie 9, I am running v10.1 - which is what I said in my comment.

    But ,if you read what you wrote, this is what you actually said ;

    I'm running iMovie 11 v10.1

    So Rich Rydalch was correct in saying this;

be aware that iMovie 11 is actually version 9.

    Comments like

As for not knowing what a segv is, well, I >do< know, I've been a software engineer for more than 30 years now.

    are not helpful.

Let's all remain friendly, and help each other.

If we're being friendly, why are you dragging this out?

When I open the the About box for my copy of iMovie it clearly says "iMovie 11 v10.1". I'm sorry if you find that confusing - and note that I am reporting the exact same crash as Semantics is posting about elsewhere in this thread: Re: Imovie 11 crashes with OS El Capitan

    Thanks for the support thesurreyfriends.

porkchop_d_clown, also be aware that you are posting on a discussion of iMovie 11 problems. As I have stated before, I have yet to find anyone who can run iMovie 11 (v9) and El Capitan. Something went south when Apple introduced El Capitan and that may well be the situation you pointed out. But iMovie v10 works fine for most users so I can't believe that the problem is on Apple's end.

I think our only hope is if enough of us call in to Apple and complain they may do something about the problem. Otherwise the only solution is to dig out an old mac with a previous OS or wipe your system and go back to a previous OS and continue working with iMovie v9 there.

Understood - my main reason for adding my own crash report was to add weight to the discussion, but als because your post makes people believe that updating will solve iMovie crashes and that is obviously not true.

At this point my machine has submitted 20-30 crash reports to Apple over the past 3 days.

If your "About iMovie box" indicates iMovie 11 v10.1 you have a serious problem somewhere. I would not even venture a guess as to what that problem might be, You may need a technician to take a look at your computer.

    Here's what it should show:

    Semantics,

Did you ever find a cure for your crash? In particular, I'm wondering if you tried starting with a new movie library. I'm going to try that tonight to see if it makes a difference.

Edit: Bah. Answered my own question - completely deleted the existing movie library and theater, started imovie and when I quit it crashed.

Any suggestions for an alternate program to edit videos and create DVD's?  My high-level requirements:

    • Titles
    • Transitions
    • Chapter Markers
    • Simple DVD menu creation that uses chapter markers

I mainly create DVD's for my daughter's violin teacher.  I record her recitals and create DVD's for each student that contains all the performances that were part of the recital.  I put each performance in it's own chapter so they can jump to their performance easily.  Nothing fancy, but I trade her for a month worth of lessons every time she has a recital.

Looks like Final Cut Pro X will do the job, but it seems crazy that I have to spend $299.99 for something I got for free for many years.  I'm sure it has a zillion advanced features that I'll never use.  The iMovie/iDVD combo worked great for what I used it for.  Too bad Apple hasn't figured out backwards compatibility among their own products.
