Q: Can't backup iPad 2

Hi folks,

I have an iPad 2 currently running iOS 7.1.2.  It's been a while since I bothered connecting to my Macbook (mid 2012, OS X 10.11.1, iTunes v12.2.1.23), but I finally decided to upgrade the iPad to iOS 9.1 for the sake of an app upgrade I'd love to have, but iTunes refuses to proceed citing an error while backing up.  I have no trouble syncing - copying purchases etc, but the backup fails with a vague error message: 'iTunes could not back up the iPad "Foo's iPad" because an error occurred.' (some names have been changed to protect the innocent ;-) ).  There are no details, so I don't know if there are corrupted files or some other physical problems.  The iPad has ~14GB free space, if that matters, and there's certainly no issue with free space on the Mac.  I have one old backup dated 2014-09-14, so it was possible at some point.

Any thoughts?  I'd love to just see what the error might be, but I have no idea where iTunes might log such a thing, if it ever bothers.

Thanks
