My iphone broke by falling from my pant pocket. I have been usng apple phones for a long while and this ahas never happened before. i want apple to replace the device as its just one month old. This is not expected from such a brand.

Yes, an object can and will break when dropped. Apple is under no obligation to replace a product that has been damaged. They may well replace it, but you will have to pay.

You need to make an appointment at apple store .
For repair / replacement but you will need to pay part of the cost.
Buy a good leather case .

Any personal electronics device, other than those specifically "ruggedized" to withstand abuse can break from a fall. The distance fallen has nothing to do with it as it will vary tremendously by how it actually lands on impact and what it landed on.
It's your device, you dropped it and broke it so no, it's not Apple's or anybody else's fault.
There are cases out there designed to withstand drops. If you want drop protection, invest in a case that provides such protection.
