british keyboard

Hi

I have a UK issued 17" MacBook Pro with a British Keyboard. the Keyboard Type in keyboard preferences is also set to British. However, the backslash key types hash instead of the backslash and also the double quote key and the ampersand key are swapped over! Has anyone come across anything like this? How can I remap keys to type what they're supposed to?

Thanks guys for the help. I had omitted something from the original question which I guess changes the nature of the issue completely (my bad): this issue only occurs when you remote desktop onto a PC via VPN (provided by a java app called Juniper). On mac's native environment its fine. I just noticed under these conditions, it behaves similar to selecting the British-PC as the input source. I have tried all kind of combination keys to get backslash but was not able to get a backslash out of the keyboard on Remote Desktop!
