Pages 4.3 (iWork 09) in El Capitan - Hyphenation

Hi community,

one of my friends uses macs at home and for his business. He created lots of flyers and other papers using the Pages 4.3 app for years now. Recently we updated from Yosemite to El Capitan to solve a different problem on his iMac and MacBook Pro. So far the OS itself runs quite good and we even noticed a performance improvement.

The (big) problem is, that all documents layouts, that where created in Pages 4.3 get torn apart when opening them. The obvious cause is the non-working automatic hyphenation (german language) in Pages 4.3. Hyphenation is still activated in the settings, but somehow it refuses to work at all. Deactivating and reactivating the hyphenation for the document or parts of it does not change anything.

Switching to Pages 5.x is possible, but lots of people in the forums and elsewhere don't recommend to do so. Switching to a newer version would surely involve to re-layout some or even all of the Pages 4.3 documents.

I've found another users (german) post, that has exactly the same problem and states, that there is no "cure" for the problem yet. (http://www.therapage-apfelcomputer.de/?post=el-capitan-und-die-silbentrennung-in -pages-4-3#content). I did not find anything in this forum here, yet. But i might have used the wrong terms.

Do you have any idea, how i could possibly fix this problem without having to switch to a newer Pages version or even to another layout app - which would involve a large amount of work to reformat all the stuff my friend created over the last 3 years?

I thought that may re-installing the iWorks 09 suite could possibly fix the issue? Or is there any other workaround i could use?

Its me again, writing from my home account.

I found a solution for the problem. While it wasn't possible to use the hyphenation in the old Pages Version 4.3 - which still resides under FINDER -> APPLICATIONS -> IWORKS 09 - it was possible to load the documents in the new Pages Version 5.6 which came with the El Capitan update.

Once i loaded the old documents in the new Pages version i had to mark the contents of the document, switch hyphenation to "off" for the document, then just reactivated it and it worked.

Now my friend just has to get used to the re-worked interface layout and maybe the missing features in the newer version - which he might not have used at all. But at least the older documents are opened and can be editet to a point that is usable and not overly work intensive.

"just get used to [...] the missing features"

Pages 5 is a completely different program. It does not support internal links. it just removes them. It does not allow to see two adjacent pages on the screen. It does not contain several features that you really need if you want to design a book. One will not notice at once, but every couple of days one will painly miss another feature. That is why we still want to use Pages 4.3. Pages 5 is no alternative.

If you call a donkey Horse 5 it will still be a donkey – even if Apple kills all horses.
