Unless the problem has been solved already, could you possibly provide us with additional information about the backup? Exact error message? What kind of backup device is it (make/model)? Are you using the aforementioned iMac with OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)? Is this referring to Time Machine (If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine - Apple Support)?

JAg har startat om oCh om igen både dator och ext HD , nu iMacen hittar inte extern HD'n heller. Angående fel meddelande kan inte skriva allt,

I have upgraded to El Capitan. External HD is a WD Elements. I usually run a Time Machine backup now and then. It has worked well. I have restarted again and again, both computer and external HD. Now, the iMac cannot locate the external HD. Cannot write everything regarding the error.
