How to correctly import 120fps iPhone video?

When I import slow motion video from iPhone 5S which I understand is supposed to be 120 fps footage I get a popup that says the "Video Properties of this clip are not recognized." However, the max FPS it allows me to select is 60. Do I just select 60 and ignore it or is there something wrong here?

Generally what am I supposed to do when I have frame rates above 60?

Thanks.

That's exactly right. You created the project using the default setting based on first clip. The application cannot set a 120 frame rate project. It's asking you what frame rate you want for the project. You set the frame rate to 25 if that's what you want.

Setting the the project to 120 would completely defeat the purpose of the high frame rate recording. You'd use every frame you had to make the project frame rate; you'd have no extra frames to create the slomo.

I understand the purpose of shooting high frame rates and the reasons and implications for setting my project to a given frame rate but the language here is confusing. In this dialog box it's saying it doesn't recognize the properties of the clip and it's asking me what they are... well the clip is 120 fps. I am trying to import it into a 25 fps project so I can get smooth slow motion. To me the correct answer here is 720p 1280x720 120p rate ** it isn't an option.

Are you saying that the rate I should select here should be whatever the project rate is regardless of the frame rate of the clip?

Thanks.

You wouldn't, but if you create a new project using the default: base project on first clip, and the first clip has a frame rate used by FCP, you would never see that dialog. There is no way for the application to know what project frame rate you intend other than by using the first clip, or by you specifying the frame rate you want. If you shot 50fps and wanted to use a 25fps project, you wouldn't see the dialog; the project would be created in 50fps if you used the default setting. If the first clip is 60fps or lower, in a standard frame rate down to 23.98, the user never sees the dialog you see. You only see it because FCP does create projects at 120fps.
