Q: iTunes sync greyed out can' backup

Just now I tried to backup my iPhone in iTunes and I was unable to. I was also not able to sync. This button was greyed out. I connect a cable and this also failed to backup or sync. iTunes also did not show a breakdown of the data on the phone, only showing an orange bar area where the data breakdown would be, and the free space, which looked accurate.

My iPad however backed up & synced ok.


Macbook Pro Retina early 2015 (had it a couple of weeks), El Capitan 10.11.1, latest version iTunes 12.3.1.23. iPhone 6s 64GB, iOS 9.1.

The iPad is a iPad mini2 latest iOS.


Please help.
