Q: App Store BTS update?

Today at about 5:00pm EST all Mac users in my Call of Duty 4 clan could no longer open their App Store copy of CoD4. However, all of us have several apps that were purchased via the App Store that won't open and some that will. Console shows the following for CoD4 attempting to launch.

com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.aspyr.callofduty4_mp.88672[570]): Service exited with abnormal code: 3

So at first I assumed a possible BTS update to Gatekeeper. However, I have Gatekeeper disabled. And just in case I did a codesign verification on CoD4. And just to go 1 step further I even forced my own fully functional Mac developer code signature onto the app. However, none of that worked.

Anyone have any ideas as to why certain Mac App Store apps all of the sudden stopped working across several continents all at the same time?

You're looking at the first certificate. You need to look at the last one which overrides all previous.

That's what I thought, hence finding the last two lines above.

    Validity

                Not Before: Apr 25 21:40:36 2006 GMT

                Not After : Feb  9 21:40:36 2035 GMT

    The first certificate says

    CA: FALSE

while the other two say CA: TRUE

However, if the last certificate overrides the first two listed, why wouldn't it work as it should? I'll try a full reboot and see what happens, but I'm guessing nothing.

It is still not working for me!!

Have tried multiple variations of removing and re-downlaoding, logged out of App store, logged into App Store, restarted etc - all to no avail!

Try to launch the app and it's lucky if it bounces once then nothing!!!

    I still get the:

    13/11/15 5:19:30.496 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.aspyr.callofduty4.152992[1935]) Service exited with abnormal code: 173

    error in Console!

Can someone please tell me how to fix this and be able to play COD4? I have tried everything I could think of and have searched to no avail for a fix.

Unfortunately we are all still waiting on Aspyr to fix this issue. They are working with Apple to resolve it as soon as possible. Apparently.

I wouldn't hold my breath... So far, Apple doesn't seem to give a flying f***, said nothing, and basically are waiting for the storm to pass while shoving this under the rug. Devs are on their own as much as the users, it seems. I remember reading somewhere than the devs have to upgrade to a new SDK as the previous ones don't support encryption beyond SH1 or something.

I'm willing to bet when and if Apple says anything about this, it will blame it on the developers because they didn't upgrade their SDK or something...

Anyway, lesson learned. No buying through the App Store again, that's a given. They can shove their 30% where the sun don't shine.

I had only one app that would not launch, Newsfire (RSS Reader); originally Tapbots required the sign-in, but after the initial request and sign-in, there has been no problems launching.  I finally got Newsfire re-installed and working this morning.  I deleted the app, emptied the Trash, opened the App Store, logged in and logged out.  Rebooted.  Launched App Store, signed in and downloaded Newsfire from Purchases.  And presto, it launched!  Whether it was this exact sequence or something changed on Apple's end, remains to be seen.

    Found a solution!

    1) Contact Apple and ask for a full refund on software purchased through app store that is not working (Apple refunded me the full cost this morning).

    2) Purchase said software directly from software vendor.

    3) Never purchase software from app store again and hope that the OS updates don't have the same issue moving forward because somebody at Apple forgets to do a rudimentary task.

Apple responded with this when asked for a full refund:

    "Dear ---------

Unfortunately we are unable to issue refunds on 3rd party developer apps but would suggest you contact them directly and request a refund from them.

As we take a portion of sales from apps sold in the App Store, I will be happy to issue you with 3 movie rental credits, which you can use at any time for any available movie of your choice.

We're sorry you had this experience and hope you will continue to use iTunes and the App Store for your future purchases.

    Etc etc" (my edit)

Well, that makes sense, as they don't actually own the apps in question. And they were generous enough to give me the credits, which far exceeds the percentage they made on my purchase of COD4, so I'm happy with that much at least.

I have to agree, it's probably going to be easier, if a little more expensive, to buy direct from the vendor, but this is not always possible.

Please read the previous posts before making such a request. If you had, you'd see that we're all in the same boat.

But you're able to purchase the game from another source such as Steam or directly from the vendor. At this time, it's the only option because as Zaroff noted,

"I wouldn't hold my breath... So far, Apple doesn't seem to give a flying f***, said nothing, and basically are waiting for the storm to pass while shoving this under the rug."

    Progress:

This is what worked for me, as per Aspyr instructions, for KOTOR and Monkey Island both.

-Delete the app (Kotor, Monkey Island, CoD4, whichever). Empty trash. Make sure no remnants are still present (App Cleaner is your friend).

-Open the App Store and sign out from it.

    -Reboot (mandatory).

    -Open App Store, sign in.

    -Re-download.

    Should work...

I just ended up deleting the app specific .plist and .bom from the receipts folder. I'm redownloading now on my amazingly slow connection.

    /private/var/db/receipts

We shall see if it works.

I might try this method for COD4 then and see if it works...just hope it doesn't take all night!

    Fast forward several minutes....

...even though I downloaded the COD4 app again today, just went into the Library, Application Support area annnnddd...it's not even there! But is on my computer.
