Q: Where can I find a version of Page 09? New computer and need to downgrade to 09

HI all! My Macbook Pro mid 2012 bit the dust and I had to purchase a new laptop.  Now working on a Retina display Macbook Pro - when I restored my backup on my new computer it did not bring in Page 09?  Is it not compatible with El Capitan? Is there a way to go into my time machine back up and drag the application over? or anywhere online that I can download Pages 09.  The new pages still doesn't link text boxes so is incompatible with my office needs.  Thanks!

If your last update for Pages '09 is v4.3 from the OS X App Store (prior to 10/2013), then it can be restored from Time Machine, because all of the dependent Pages libraries are internal to the application package. Not true for Pages '09 from the DVD, whose libraries are installed externally into System locations.

 

If you had originally installed Pages '09 from the retail iWork '09 DVD, it cannot be restored from Time Machine, and must be reinstalled from the DVD media. However, that will just install Pages 09 v4.0.1 which not only does not support retina displays, but also is too old for El Capitan. You will need to apply the Apple iWork 9.3 update to get the Pages '09 v4.3 release, retina support, and El Capitan compatibility.

 

If you no longer have the iWork '09 DVD, you can still purchase it from Amazon — but not from Apple. Those Amazon prices have crept up $6USD in just the last three months.

    My what an ordeal! .  So if I purchase the DVD from Amazon, then of course I have to find or borrow a drive, since the new macs don't have them. Can I install it and then upgrade? Do I have the steps right?  I'll do it!  Thanks ever so much!

    Since your new Mac came with the new iWork apps pre-installed, you can use this trick to get Pages 4.3. First, you need to link them to your Apple ID by following the steps in this Apple support article. You must still have access to a Mac running Mountain Lion or Lion, Snow Leopard won't work. If the iWork '09 apps are installed on that older Mac, compress them & delete the originals. Launch the Mac App Store & log in with the Apple ID you used to purchase the new versions then click on the 'install' buttons under the iWork apps. You will get a message that you can't install the new version on this Mac but it will offer to download the previous version for you. Voilá, you have the self-contained apps that you can copy to another Mac.

    Well this so a bit too clever for me. and I don't have a machine running any cats anymore - all mountains or sea.  Thanks - I am sure this may be helpful to someone who will have a similar issue.

    1. Line up a an external DVD to borrow
    2. Get the iWork '09 DVD from Amazon, and install it
    3. Apply the Apple iWork 9.3 updater.
    4. Done.

    You can transfer the DVD installer onto a flash drive and install from that. An Apple Store may be able to help if you don't have a DVD drive, although they are quite cheap and useful.
