Can I use the backup from a 4th generation iPod touch to use on a new 6th generation iPod touch?

I currently have an iPod touch 4th generation, which has a lot of photos and apps with data on them. I am looking to get a new iPod touch 6th generation this Christmas, but I am unsure if i can still use the same backup from my iPod 4th generation in order to keep the same data on the new ipod. Will I be able to use the backup from my old iPod to keep and use the exact same data (photos and apps etc) on the new iPod? I am worried that the new iPod won't accept the backup, so I will have lost a lot of data, or can no longer use it.

I would be grateful if anyone has any information. Thanks 🙂

Yes. You can restore your 4th gen backup onto a 6th Gen iPod with no issues.

You might have issues because a fourth gen iPod will not run iOS 9, like your new iPod.

It does not matter. The 4th gen does not need to run iOS 9. The 6th gen will load the backup from the older iOS just fine.

Worked for me. I replaced my iPod Touch 4G with a 6G. Just backed up the 4G on iTunes and restored it on the 6G. Lost nothing.

Thank's for that info about transferring across iOS versions. I've just assumed it's necessary because Apple support always says to do it.

Backups have always been backwards compatible.

The only issue you may have is when trying to restore from a backup made on a newer version of iOS to a device running an older version of iOS. In that case you do need to update the iOS version if possible.

Otherwise there should be no issues.
