Apple TV 4 won't connect to 5ghz wifi after 9.0.1 update

Hello All,

I updated my Apple TV 4 to the 9.0.1 update today and now my Apple TV won't connect to my 5ghz wifi network.

I have an Airport Extreme with the option on to create a separate 5ghz network that I use just to connect the Apple TV. Having it combined made streaming on Apple TV impossible.

Now after the update, the Apple TV will connect to the regular wifi network but not the 5ghz network. I tried restarting and unplugging the Apple TV and the router but it won't work. I switched my computer over to the 5ghz network and it works fine.

Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

Thanks - Sean

Hello ***,

Your problem may not be the same as the OP. Suggestions:

First, power cycle ATV, to ensure a clean start.

Second, go to network wifi settings. Does it list your 5G network in the choices? If so, you should be able to connect by selecting it and entering the key.

If not, there are a couple of possibilities:

You may have set the SSID to unpublished in the router. You can still connect by selecting "other" and entering the SSID explicitly.

You may have configured the router to reject unknown MAC addresses. You need to allow the ATV MAC address in the router.

If ATV is relatively far from the router, the signal level may just be too low. 5G attenuation is higher than at 2.4G.

Thanks Diana. I have an IT background and have already ruled all the configuration items. I do not have MAC address filtering enabled, it does list my 5G options as I stated I can't connect to them, not that I couldn't see them. I also do not have my SSID's hidden, so that isn't it. The only one it could possibly be is the attenuation of the 5G network. However, my Gen 3 AppleTV never had an issue with it and the Gen 4 is in the same place. I will move it a bit closer and see what happens.

Thanks.

Hello ***,

So, the 5G network is listed in the available wifi networks, but you cannot connect? That surprises me, since I thought it wouldn't list a network that it would not be able to connect. You may nned to enter or correct the WPA key, but that should be all. You might be experiencing new interference at this location; a different channel might be better; but you know how to handle that. There are several other recent threads on wifi problems.

Just to reiterate, you have power cycled the ATV.

Also, if you've done a software update, you should check over your settings, since they seem to go a little haywire after the update.

If all else fails, you may need to do a full restore using a computer with iTunes, and a USB-C cable to connect the ATV. I think that's what the OP did with the Time Capsule. Search this site for how to restore ATV 4 software.
