Q: Contacts and Messages hogging CPU after update to El Capitan Server

We recently updated our Mac OS 10.6.8 SLS server to 10.11.1.

We host CardDav and CalDav on this machine and had a tough time getting everything migrated over.

We have to 10.11 clients (unfortunately my computers) that are having a terrible time with the Messages & Contacts app.  On both a MacBook Pro and an iMac 5K Retina machine, Messages is almost unusable; you can't type more than 5 words without a spinning beach ball and it and "soagent" are taking a ton of CPU cycles.

If I remove the shared AddressBooks from either of these machines then the problem goes away.

The 10.10 Yosemite clients are all working great, no delays, same with iOS devices (working great).

Any ideas on how to fix this?

To be more clear, we bought a new server and migrated from 10.6.8 to 10.10.11 (basically carbon copy cloner to move the files, everything was setup from scratch).  The CardDav data was exported from the old server and then re-imported.
