Number keys not working

I have a MacBook Pro (2011 version) and the numbers keys 1 to 9 stopped working together with the key to the left of 1 (ss).

I rebooted etc but still the same ...

I checked out suggestions on this forum which suggested to go into single mode which I did successfully but then didn't really understand what to look for - so came out of that ...

Another suggestion was to use keyboard viewer which I did and it confirmed the keys that worked and that the 10 keys didn't ....

Then about half hour after trying this, the key to left of 1 started working so now only 1 to 9 are not working now ...

Anyhow my question is about the keyboard viewer - does the fact that these number keys do not flash on this keyboard confirm that it is def a hardware/keyboard problem and not software?

Hey stevie8ch,

It sounds like you are getting good information for troubleshooting keys not workirg on the keyboard.

As mentioned in If your Apple wireless mouse, keyboard, or trackpad aren't working as expected - Apple Support, Keyboard Viewer is your first and easiest test to see if keys are responding (near the bottom).

The Notes below it add that you can test in single-user mode as a final test. Once in single-user mode, just type the keys in question (and maybe some others) to see if they show on the screen. If they don't appear on the screen then the keys are not working.

If they keys don't type there, you need to get your computer serviced.
