Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup. Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed. When I woke up it was "dead". It wouldn't wake up. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life. Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand. Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day. Came back to it, same thing. Dead. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing. I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

I have the same problem with my 128gig iPad Pro, and I ended up losing valuable work because of the Genius Bar...

When I took my iPad Pro to the Genius Bar the guy there made me backup to iCloud and told me NOT to backup on my laptop and only use iCloud to restore it - which I stupidly did. And lo and behold, not only did the backup not restore, it gave me the white screen of death (in front of the Apple employees), so they gave me a brand new iPad Pro on the spot, and the same thing happened again and it refused to restore from the backup. They made me call iCloud services on the phone and the guy there declared that my backup was corrupted and that with iCloud there was no way to restore to an older backup. Needless to say I lost all the thesis work I created with the Apple Pencil on Procreate because it doesn't use iCloud to backup, and all my work on the Adobe art apps disappeared as well even though I was using my CreativeCloud account.

They made me set it up as a new device, and for some reason Procreate refused to show up as a previously purchased app, so I had to buy it again. I go home and the iPadPro is dead again. Now every time I charge it, it dies and I have to hard reset it over and over and over again... I don't even know if this is damaging the brand new and expensive device.

Instead of going to the store this time I spoke with apple support and the guy made me wait 15 minutes and came up with the solution of taking it to the Apple Store and getting a new iPad... instead of fixing this bug, they're going to keep replacing iPads?? I don't even know if I should bother again....

Because for me, it happened the first night and has not happened since. I happily use my iPad Pro every day without a hitch.

I'm not sure if it happened because overnight it was still backing up from iCloud, or what. I did switch charging cables, but it doesn't happen with either cable - one from Amazon nor the one that came with it. It also doesn't matter on mine if hey Siri is enabled or not.

yes sir. In Settings follow General -> Siri and toggle "Allow 'Hey Siri'" to the on position. Speculation is this solves the power down problem because the iPad stays alert, waiting for you to say "Hey Siri".

I received my replacement iPad Pro in the mail, restored from iCloud, charged for the night and it was unresponsive in the morning. I flicked on "Hey Siri" that day and haven't had a problem since (5 or 6 days now)

I agree with you. It's shocking to me Apple moderators don't check into this room even if only to provide a temporary fix, as you put it. I can't speak for anybody else but I keep playing with them because I want/need my iPad to work. That being said, I respect your decision to send it back; for the premium Apple charges for their products this is garbage.

The "Hey Siri" ON fix is working fine for me. One could also join the beta program.

Why do I keep fooling with it? Because I expect Apple to come out with a fix, and when they do, the fix will work. They've publicly acknowledged it. They don't want to release some half-baked fix, or come in to the forum and say something totally wrong.

They are astoundingly complex products with as many possible configurations as there are users. The problem may come from the specific apps or configuration that we have. I'm sure they did an amazing amount of testing.

As short as this thread is, I think it hints that only a small percentage of iPad Pro owners are having the problem.

Thanks, so you recommended I turn Siri back on?

Please don't troll in here. Surface pro 4 has so many problems that are far worse. I had to deal with incomplete intel drivers, video distortion issues, rapidly draining battery, locking up face login, poor wifi signals, etc... The list for the surface pro is so much larger, that your statement can only be considered trolling. The issue we're trying to bring attention to here is very specific and it's for the sole reason of getting Apple to fix it properly. There's several people who keep posting in here as MS shills about the surface pro 4/book and really those have their own set of issues that don't belong here.

I totally understand the charging issue. I've talked with several people that have had the non-charging issue and I tell them that in fact is defective hardware somewhere and they should get an exchange for it. The issue this thread is focused on is the apparent non-charge, but after a hard reset (holding the home and power button for 20 seconds to reboot the ipad) the ipad works again. The ipad should show a full 100% charge from sitting on the charger all night even if it's not waking up properly. If you are having issues with the ipad pro restarting during use constantly, or not charging, then I'd recommend starting a different thread or searching for one that matches that problem because that would be a different issue and needs to have visibility into it.

So far those of us investigating it in this thread have found 2 solutions that seem to work without fail:

- Install ios 9.2 beta (hope that ios 9.2 comes out soon).

- Turn on Siri, and Turn on Hey Siri. (both need to be on).

The other things people in this thread have attempted that seemed to work for some but haven't provided as much success:

- Try a different lightning cable and charger.

- Try isolating the charger and cable to it's own outlet.

- Ensure that the volume is not muted.

- Turn on airplane mode with charging.

- Turn off back up to icloud.

- Turn on back up to icloud. (Yah, which shows that's probably not the issue).

If you are having an issue that isn't a full charge over night and then a blank screen when you go to turn it on then it sounds like you have a totally different issue and you should RMA that thing with Apple and get a different ipad pro.

For the record the full charge, black screen issue has been found to be on ipads that were new set up out of box with apps downloaded, ipads that had the icloud backup restored, ipads restored from itunes backup, etc. I.e. it doesn't matter how it was set up. If you talk to an apple genius and they are unaware of this issue or try to lump it in with a different issue, point out this thread to them (not sure if they'll read through it though).

All we can do is hope that ios 9.2 is released soon at this point. The iPad Pro is actually magnificent, and for those people with the problem in this thread it's a 20 second fix generally once a day, and a 3 second fix for those that turn on Hey Siri. Any other problem is completely unrelated to this thread and shouldn't be lumped into the same area.

Hope that helps.
