Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

The factory reset and restore through iTunes did not help. Woke up this morning same thing. 4 charges 4 times dead.

    I have noticed the following.

1: needs a charge of more than 12%

2: set up for iCloud back up

3: charges all night or at least several hours

i tried with a small drain on the battery 97% left and on a charger and it didn't manifest this issue.

Perhaps  a hardware issue when the battery finishes topping off from a long charge where it needed to do a lot of charging?  Or perhaps it's when iCloud backup starts since it never actually backs mine up while charging, though I can manually do it.

    Hi David,

As evidenced by past firmware issues on other products, sometimes not all products are affected.

Maybe you could post the differences between your two iPad Pros.

My iPad is a silver, white, 128 GB, LTE iPad Pro.

I have the same results minus the fact that I do not back up to iCloud. I back up to iTunes old school.

Same situation here.  Any overnight charge below 80% seems to trigger it for me.

I suggest waiting for an update. Why stress over a return when it will most likely happen again? The best thing to do is make Apple Support level 2 or higher aware of this thread.

    Same problem.

Overnight charging for the last two days and unresponsive iPad Pro in the morning needing hard reset.

Will try tomorrow disconnecting the charger before switching it on.

It's impossible to tell from the anecdotes given here how widespread this problem is. I'm hoping that users who are NOT having this problem will start to post their experiences, because without that information, it's starting to feel like this bug is present in nearly all new iPad Pros, That seems very unlikely, though, as that would almost surely have led to a delay in the launch date. For a while here, therefore, please chime in with more results, both "I have the problem" and "I do NOT have the problem." Until those are available, we who have not yet ordered our Pros will have little choice but to postpone our purchases

Both instances for me were after unplugging.  As I noted above, when charging at night 80% and above, it was fine. Will try that again tonight.

    Hi there,

I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing this issue with this rather fantastic device. Upon reviewing the posts of this thread I failed to notice if setting up the Pro as a brand new iPad (not restoring from an iCloud backup) helps in eliminating that issue.

Although, it is quite possible that this is a hardware problem, the sheer uniformity of symptoms seem to indicate a software bug (firmware, perhaps) rather than effective unit.

    Let us know, please.

    Cheers!

Users who have a perfectly functioning device will rarely come to post how well their device is working on a troubleshooting forum.
