Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

    Resolved.

I Resolved my issue with the IPad Pro locking up after a 100% charge. The only change I made was to enable the "hey Siri" function. Once I did that it has not locked up with well over 10 recharges. I assume by leaving Hey Siri on it never really goes into a complete power down state.  Hope this helps

Funny you say that, I did enable Hey Siri 2 days ago, but did not fully charge until last night , but did not leave it charging overnight though.  Still, I did charged it to 100% and stayed charging after it hit 100% for an hour and never froze. I'll try an overnight charge tonight

I also tried making this change over a week ago. ie. enabling Siri.

I did the following which immediately resolved the lock-up problem and remained lock-up free for several nights.

    • enabled Siri
    • disabled backup to iCloud
    • disabled automatic sending of diagnostics to Apple
    • disabled "Do Not Disturb"

The funny thing is, I have now reversed all of the above changes and the bug still hasn't returned.

The only extra thing that I noticed was that the new iPad Pro, restored from an old backup, had more data to backup to iCloud than I had available in iCloud storage and the iPad Pro had re-enabled iCloud backups for all apps. I disabled iCloud backups for a few apps that had large amounts of data (iBooks), and manually ran a backup to iCloud to make sure it worked. I then enabled automatic backup to iCloud and everything was sweet.

I'd be curious for others who are still having problems to see if a manual backup to iCloud works. If it fails, disable backup of data from Music, iBooks, Videos etc. Settings --> iCloud --> Storage --> Manage Storage --> iPad Pro --> disable apps that may be using lots of data eg. iBooks, Podcasts etc.

    I'm still running iOS 9.1

I setup my iPad Pro as a new iPad, no restore from backup, and I'm having the same problem.  Charged it both nights since I got it and was frozen in the morning.  Hard reset turned it on.

Restore from iTunes and reinstall ios 9.1 from iTunes, then set up as new. Fixed mine. Apple support had me do that.. They key was reinstalling 9.1 via iTunes

I've had the same problem. My first ipad pro 32gb was delivered last Thursday. It froze after only two days. It would not switch on after charging overnight. Tried for some time pressing all the buttons, and eventually, it started. Then on Tuesday, it happened again. I use the ipad during the day, then charge overnight, as I always do, with my iphone.

no matter what I did, it would not switch on, nor recognise another charging lead, nor when I connected it to iTunes on my Mac.

I Phoned Apple, explained the problem, and was offered a replacement. As I was talking to the operator, the ipad suddenly sprung into life. However, I still wanted a replacement. The ipad starated working long enough for me to restore and clear my information.

I Sent off my 'dud' ipad on Tuesday, and received my replacement one yesterday.

and today, yes, you guessed it, after charging overnight, it would not switch on!!

AFter reading all the comments about this problem, it is clearly not just a few 'isolated' ipads, and something Apple must be aware of.

WHat is Apple going to do?

if this persists, I shall send back my ipad, and demand a refund, and go back to using my iPad Air, which performed perfectly.

I have a space gray iPad Pro 128 GB Wi-Fi model running iOS 9.1 that I purchased from a local Target store. It went into a deep coma right after I initially charged the battery (there was 62% of power left when I charged it) using the standard electrical wall outlet as my energy source and using only the lightning cable and adapter provided. Now I know where the Sleep/Wake button is but since I could not find the COMA button when this happened (and I couldn't give it mouth-to-mouth since I would not want to give Siri any bad ideas about my moral character or my bad breath especially since we just met), I did the next best thing. I called Apple (but this was not during normal business hours as in I could hear what sounded like a mildly intoxicated owl mumbling something nonsensical to himself right outside my bedroom window). The Apple rep I spoke with made a little bit more sense than the owl but he hung up on me after I eventually got around to describing this piece of Apple hardware I had invested over one thousand US dollars in as a very expensive paper weight. Before the overpriced paper-weight analogy, I described the same problem to him that everyone else here is talking about. I was very clear in emphasizing that everything was working fine until after I charged the battery. After that, once I detached the lightning cable, my brand new iPad Pro remained tightly wrapped in a dismally dark shroud of sad silence. It was silent. I was sad. My efforts to rejuvenate this motionless piece of shiny black glass initially failed. The hard reboot was simply not working for me...at first. I probably wasn't waiting long enough with the Sleep/Wake + Home buttons simultaneously pressed since that eventually worked when I waited from 15 to 20 seconds. I've never been so excited to see Apple's trademarked logo and on a 12.9 inch screen to boot! And for the record, the battery was fully charged at 100% after the successful reboot. Next time, I might try charging it by using the USB port on my 2012 Mac Pro. I read one posting here where someone tried that and did not have a problem leading me to believe that Apple might have shipped defective lightning cables or adapters that are triggering this iCOMA. At one point shortly before the Apple rep abruptly terminated our relative brief interaction, he asked me in a rather suicidally-depressed-sounding voice that immediatley conveyed the dead spirit of apathy "So what do you want ME to do about it?" Hmmm. How about tell me what my options are for starters. That is the last thing I said before he unhesitantly responded with the sonically cold slap in the face and the ear most commonly known as a dial tone. I wish developers would create an app that would deliver a small (non-lethal) electrical charge to any customer service rep that hangs up on me when neither of us is even using PG-rated words let alone R or NC-17. Although I was polite, I probably did sound like someone needing to file a police report for being robbed. That's how I felt at that time anyway. One more thing. When it was "comatose" (I'm referring to my iPad Pro here not the Apple rep), I tried plugging it into my Mac Pro's USB port but that did absolutely nothing other than make a small contribution to my overall state of emotional frustration and intellectual disillusionment. I did change some settings in the hopes of preventing this problem the next time around. I turned off the LOCK/UNLOCK feature. I never activated the fingerprint scan or passcode yet (I live alone and the owl promised not to sneak in and play action games on it while I am asleep). I disabled all iCloud back-ups. I made some other minor adjustments too but I did not compile a list (since at the time, I did not know anyone else was going through the same thing I was). But I am really glad I discovered this thread. Otherwise, I would have most likely exchanged the unit I have for another one perhaps afflicted with the same kind of mechanical ineptitude and technical incompetence that only an Apple-generated firmware update is capable of permanently eradicating. I have read several postings here and elsewhere online where replacement units were equally defective. Personally, if this is the extent of the problem, I can adjust accordingly even without the firmware update that I speculate Apple might release a few years from now right after they update their 2013 Mac Pro's. I am honestly more worried about a situation where I might be unable to restore it to any level of functionality no matter how long I press any buttons and pray for a healing. I don't like the idea of possibly needing to return this product for an exchange without even being able to permanently delete my personal data that iCloud restored. It was almost magical how my data and settings from a 2012 iPad running iOS 5.1.1 were duplicated in a way that exceeded my expectations. Sometimes things just work. And sometimes they don't.

I followed the tip someone said about enabling "Hey Siri', and it worked! Charged all night long and no crash.  So everyone should try this, cause for some reason enabling this fixed the problem.

New to this post and have not read through but I have seen this issue with past apple portable products and always suggest that when You first use a new apple product that uses rechargeable batteries completely drain the battery i.e. Use it till it runs out of power before connecting to power supply. So again I suggest if experiencing this do a hard reset then run the battery down to "0" and let it sit for awhile so the battery really discharges, even overnight, then plug it into charge completely too "100%" which just might fix it. The short of the long is the OS might be seeing the batteries current status incorrectly or in this case that the battery is "0%" so the iPad can't turn on till you hard reset.

    - run the battery down to "0" - i don't believe that will have any bearing.  I had the issue the very first day after getting my iPad and had to do a hard reset.  However, I have not had it since.  Not sure why.  I changed cables for 2 days, and thought it might be due to that, but yesterday, I swapped back to the original cable that came with the iPad, and it worked fine this morning.

So I have only had it happen once, the first time I charged it.

Most of the people here have done the battery drain on set up and then recharge.   The issue still rears it's head.  So far it's looking like the only reliable method is to install the beta of iOS 9.2; although, many people are seeing success with other options.  I think the other options like the hey Siri (which I don't have on), the cable swap (which I was the first to bring up, but can't seem to replicate the lockup anymore), the airplane mode, the restore fresh from iTunes are just  all indicative of a software issue.  Not sure if it's a cloud syncing issue, or a Siri indexing issue, or something to do with the new way that the screen doesn't refresh all the pixels, or what, but the only method that seems to have consistent hope is the 9.2 beta update, which means that we should hopefully see resolution to this with the release of iOS 9.2.

I had the lockup several days in a row when I first got my iPad pro, with apps running in the background, without apps running in the background.  Everytime I had it lock up and did a force restart, the battery was at 100%. The lookups occurred only when I was charging to 100% and then letting it sit on the charger for several hours afterwards.

    - Clean install of iOS 9.1, no iTunes restore, downloaded all apps from the App Store, logged into iCloud, Siri turned on, hey Siri turned off, night mode enabled for a 10 hour time period, mute off, 65 apps installed, default wallpaper changed, brightness at 75%.

    - iPad pro 128 gold, lte, cellular not turned on, wifi turned on, using a 40Mbps internet connection.  No keyboard attached, no cover, no case.  All crashes occurred with the stock cable that came with the iPad.  After a few days I swapped cables to a brand new one sent with my Apple TV 4 and have not experienced any lookups since.  Even with the stock cable.  (Which I've tried using to see if i can replicate the lock ups). I did swap my stock cable and charger to a dedicated outlet since my lookups stopped, so that may be part of it (all the lokups did occur with multiple 12W chargers plugged into a surge protector).  Of course that may just be more rabbits being chased.

Hoping for a fix soon, not because I'm having the issues still, but because until a fix is released there is a cloud of uncertainty about the reliability of the iPad pro hanging in the air.

Also for the record, I use the iPad pro now pretty much exclusively anytime I'm away from my desk.  Obviously there are apps on my desktop that I use, but I'm not a typical user, or even a typical business user: however, I definately can see Tim Cook's point that this could replace many people's laptops.  If my relatives were looking to replace an old laptop, i would probably recommend the iPad pro.  Outside of the lockup when charging to full, the actual use of the iPad pro is Wonderful.  80% of all computer users could honestly use this as their primary driver.  Again, recognizing that the rest who are outside of that are probably special use cases or were computing and had to deal with high and low memory configurations on the command prompt from Bill Gates..

    - Typed on iPad pro onscreen keyboard.
