Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

    HI,

i was told by the Apple operator when I rang first time to complain about the ipad freezing, that I have a  14 day window to request either a replacement or refund. I chose a replacement.

WHich is why, when my second ipad froze in exactly the way the first did, that I demanded a full refund and sent it back today.

IIt's the 100% charge/left overnight problem. It's fine when I use it, but I don't have time to babysit my iPad while it charges. I plug it in at night expecting it to be ready the next morning.

In the grand scheme of things the 20 second reboot is not a problem, but it makes me worry that my $1000 premium tablet is defective. Early adopter headaches I guess. Software glitch, fine. But if it turns out to be a faulty board then we are all swapping out our new iPads for refurbs in a couple of weeks.

Of course now I'm tempted to get the AppleCare because I don't trust the hardware. Maybe that's their plan...

    I kid.

Turning on Siri seems to have worked for me. My Pro at first would require a hard reset in the morning after charging, but then started resetting itself. With Siri on, both of these problems were fixed--it was on like a normal iPad this morning after charging to 100% over night.

Well, the 14 day is pretty much a window that says, "This is crap I hate it, take it back".  i.e. you don't have to have a reason to return it, you can just return it.  Every apple hardware item I've had has a 90 day full warranty that pretty much says if something's wrong with the product in 90 days they're going to make it right and I've had issues with new products on occasion and they have made it right in that window.  The 1 year limited warranty generally gets treated the same, but is stated that way because if your dog pees on your iPad during that window they're not obligated to replace it... (my point being that in the past I've had a child come into my room while I was sleeping because they were sick, and threw up near a month old iphone (getting particles stuck in the microphone) causing my iphone to quit working in a useful capacity, and because I was in the 90 day window and the Apple genius replaced it for me pretty much after I was done explaining what happened.

I'm sure that this issue is something for which a software resolution is going to fix, but if it's a hardware issue we do have a 1 year warranty on it.  Defective screens, switches, boards, etc, would fall under that warranty.

As a data point, I have not encountered the problem central to this thread.

Some of my particulars are: 128 GB cell, Siri enabled, started off with back up via iTunes from my iPad Air, only charges so far have been done with my pc or from an battery back-up outlet but not using the new iPad Pro cable, I am using Logitech Create keyboard, and so on.

I actually have not encountered any problems with my iPad Pro. I wanted SG but had to order silver as I have not been able to locate a SG with AT&T Next that would be available before my international trip next week.

    At least, awareness is increasing.

I'll just add that I checked my iCloud backup settings, it's never backed up to iCloud even though it's set to do that, maybe it's getting stuck trying to backup when plugged in. I did a manual backup. I also turned on 'hey siri' although I'm still not sure I'm going to yell at my iPad when it's plugged in. I had to turn it off on my phone because too many times it heard a phrase that sounded similar on the radio and turned on inadvertently, and then when I actually try to use the feature she ignores me.

I'll leave it plugged in today and see what happens.

Unsure if it started out as a hardware issue, but with so many people affected hopefully a software fix will resolve it (can you imagine the chaos if all those affected had to return their iPad Pro for a replacement? How about people like me who ordered custom engraving?).

Has anyone updated to iOS 9.2 beta and the problem *NOT* resolved?

I turned on the Siri feature and my pad charged to 100% with no problem. Perhaps that solved the problem?

    Hi Gang,

Finally got hold off my LTE Silver Pro yesterday; I topped the initial charge to 100% and have been keeping it plugged (just for the time being) and I am pleased to report that I have not experienced anything.

On the things worth of noting, I set it up as a new iPad (my preference), hence no iCloud backup. I am using the Pro's charger, but coupled with certified mophie's lightning cable (9ft-long - my preference as most of us use it in the household).

Personally, I am almost certain that this is a software issue.

    Cheers & good luck y'all.

Good hear that folks are talking about this issue.  I ran into this today-will try the beta and see if it works.  Thanks all!

Definitely NOT the new cable.  I have been using a cable from previous iphone/ipad and it still locks up.

Enable "Hey Siri".  That is the fix.

Apple has acknowledged an issue and is investigating. If your iPad Pro stops responding and the screen is black - Apple Support

Problem resolved for me when I downloaded and installed the Public Beta IOS 9.2. This tells me that the 9.2 update will resolve the problem when it is released which will hopefully be VERY SOON!!

Other than this I am loving the iPad Pro WIFI 128 GB!
