Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

No lock up this morning when grabbing the iPad, so for now "Hey Siri" and Airplane mode seem to be ameliorating the issue.  Thanks again.

I Haven't had the issue in more than a week with my new iPad. However the iCloud backup is not happening.  I need to manually perform it.  If I leave the backup screen, the backup will fail, so I have to sit on that screen until it completes. So maybe it's related to that process.

So the only solution to prevent an iPad from crashing WHILE CHARGING is to put it in flight mode and turn on "Hey Siri". Amazing! This looks like an enormous blunder by Apple, which they are currently being very coy about. It does make you wonder to what extent the device was actually tested, as crashing during overnight charging should have been a fairly easy thing to spot...

I have looked at all threads to date. Various "fixes" seem to help some users, but no fix (other than 9.2 beta) solves the problem. I have been using my iPad Pro since day one with the same initial problem. Clearly the unit crashes and hangs while charging. As a temporary fix, just shut the unit down at night before charging. I have done this for the past several days, and it starts up quickly in the morning. MUCH quicker than a hard reset and no crashing. Of course, no nightly backups or app updates, so you have to do these during the day. I think this is a satisfactory temporary work around until 9.2 is officially released.

Enabling "Hey Siri" seemed to help. Last charge was 100% and no lock. No airplane mode required.

Fair enough. My last point still stands though; how is it possible that the very expensive iPad Pro was able to be sold without such a fundamental issue, and let's be honest, it is fundamental, being spotted... The only conclusion that one can come to is that no proper testing was carried out.

well as promised i am providing an updated. I have the ipad pro 128 wi-fi --cellular model. it did the usual black screen after recharging the first two nights I had it. Then, after I did a hard reset, I let the pro stay on a few hours, then I  turned on "Hey Siri", followed by shutting the ipad down by pressing the sleep button and sliding the off button off. for 10 days the ipad pro has worked like a charm. It seems like thee are two or three options that gets the pro working properly. I think the ultimate fix will be 9.2. (I have 9.1).  Rudy

Enabled 'Hey Siri' last night before putting on charge. Didn't apply 'Airplane Mode'.

No lock up and no need for hard reset this morning.

That'll do as a workaround for me for the time being until Apple get their act together. Disappointed by Apple's lack of response for what they're tagging as a premium professional product.

SSame problem here, I bought 2 iPad Pros, 128gig with LTE. My wife's has had no problems, mine of course is the one that I have to do the hard reset. Funny thing is it does not happen every time. When I went to the Apple Store 2 weeks ago t7he genius asked if I wanted to exchange for a new one, I am thinking about going back and just get a new one at this point.

I purchased two iPad Pros last weekend from Best Buy.  Both are having the same issue.  At first I thought I was doing something wrong, as well as hiring an electrician to check my electric thinking the outlet was burning the iPads out.  I returned both to iPads to Best Buy's Geek Squad who were equally puzzled.  This blog helped me understand the issue, which I will be relaying to my local Geek Squad support team.  Big miss on Apple's part.

    Hi There,

My new ipad pro has the same problem, but so far only when it is connected to the smart keyboard. When the smart keyboard is not connected, the ipad charges just fine, no reboot needed. I had my ipad pro over a week, charging fine, and as soon as I got the keyboard, and I charged with the keyboard, the problem started. Now I am back to charging without the keyboard, and it charges fine again, no hard reboot needed, so far.

    Best,

    G

I had the same problem your having right out of the box until someone posted on here on using a different cord instead of the one which came with the iPad Pro.  I tried using the lighting cord which I brought from Amazon and I never had the problem since.  Another post post on here said they use their old cord from their iPad Air and the problem went away.  I suggest you use a different cord that didn't come with the iPad Pro and see if that works.

Everyone keeps posting temporary fixes. Why not just send it back to Apple like I did and reorder when they get it right?

you know when 9.2 comes out and then you reorder another one,  you will get another 9.1 iPad pro, and you'll have to update it to 9.2

    so why bother ???
