Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

Because right now, you don't have an iPad Pro, while the rest of us do...all for the price of turning on "Hey, Siri."

So, I've had a week and a half of no issues charging, but this morning BOOM, lock up.  So, what was different today?  Well for one, I've had a week and a half of no lock up but without having hey siri turned on.  Last night I turned the volume of my ipad pro all the way down so it was essentially muted.  Overnight charge, lock up.  SO, tonight I will turn the volume all the way down and turn hey siri on.  If I recall, when I first got my ipad pro and was charging it over night I was muting my ipad pro at night, so that may have something to do.  Will find out if the hey siri overrides the lockups from the muting.  If it does I'm going to test to see if I can get it to lock up every time I have the hey siri turned off and the volume muted.

Did you connect a smart keyboard to your iPad Pro only from today, or have you always had your smart keyboard connected from day one when you got your iPad?

The reason I ask is because there was an earlier posting indicating that his/her iPad charged up successfully with no locking-up issues when charging without the smart keyboard connected to the device, then as soon as the smart keyboard was connected to the iPad - that's when the highlighted issues began to haunt.

I Bought 2 iPad Pro Wi-Fi Cellular 128GB, one silver & 1 gold. The gold one does this everyday. The silver one has done it twice. Have talked to applecare several times. I sent the gold one back and am waiting for a replacement. Was contacted by someone from apple care who is associated with the engineering dept. He had me do several maneuvers and then sent the data from my iPad to him. They are aware and are working on the problem. He said the replacement may have the same problem as it is probably a firmware or software problem. I have wasted a lot of time dealing with this. Tried all the reinstall etc. total waste of time. I will just do the hard reset everyday until they figure it out. I am not sending the second one in.  I do not have a keyboard so I don't think the keyboard is the issue with mine. Don't know why one is having more problems than the other. This is very annoying. Apple products used to "just work".

I had this same problem and am now on my second iPad Pro which, you guessed it, has the exact same problem.  When checking various settings I saw "Hey Siri" was disabled.  I enabled Hey Siri and have not had a single issue since.  If your hey siri is disabled, switch it on and see what happens.  I have absolutely no idea why this would solve the problem but it did for me.

By the way, it is the only setting i changed.  the only variable from one night to the next is the toggling on of Hey Siri.  Good luck!

I Have exactly the same problem. Went to Aaple shop and all they told me was to reset iPad Pro.  Very disappointing response from Apple. Lost my respect

Got replacement Ipad yesterday. Plugged in overnight. Did NOT turn on Siri. Started up no problem, but then asked for my password and said it was needed after a restart. Must have restarted its self. At least I didn't have to do reset.will turn on Siri and see what happens tomorrow.

Date to my post above: I plugged in my iPad Pro into my iMac to do a local backup and left it connected overnight. Charge went from 77% to 100%. No hard reboot required. Upon ejection the iPad screen lit up and everything was as it was supposed to be. We shall see what the future brings. maybe this was a one-off event.

I have the same problem with my 128gig iPad Pro, and I ended up losing valuable work because of the Genius Bar...

When I took my iPad Pro to the Genius Bar the guy there made me backup to iCloud and told me NOT to backup on my laptop and only use iCloud to restore it - which I stupidly did. And lo and behold, not only did the backup not restore, it gave me the white screen of death (in front of the Apple employees), so they gave me a brand new iPad Pro on the spot, and the same thing happened again and it refused to restore from the backup. They made me call iCloud services on the phone and the guy there declared that my backup was corrupted and that with iCloud there was no way to restore to an older backup. Needless to say I lost all the thesis work I created with the Apple Pencil on Procreate because it doesn't use iCloud to backup, and all my work on the Adobe art apps disappeared as well even though I was using my CreativeCloud account.

They made me set it up as a new device, and for some reason Procreate refused to show up as a previously purchased app, so I had to buy it again. I go home and the iPadPro is dead again. Now every time I charge it, it dies and I have to hard reset it over and over and over again... I don't even know if this is damaging the brand new and expensive device.

Instead of going to the store this time I spoke with apple support and the guy made me wait 15 minutes and came up with the solution of taking it to the Apple Store and getting a new iPad... instead of fixing this bug, they're going to keep replacing iPads?? I don't even know if I should bother again....

That sounds freaking awful!  I'm on my 2nd one as well... i lost a movie i was editing but nothing as important as your work.  I fixed mine by turning on "Hey Siri" in the settings.  I don't know why but it seems to have worked for a number of people.  Good luck!

I also have this issue with my 128GB.  When is Apple going to come up with a solution?  This is ridiculous.  I've talked with support and done everything they said yet it still happens every time it's plugged in.  I actually bought 2 of these as one is a gift....maybe I'll be returning both to the store.
