Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

There's been a lot of solutions that have been posted on here, and almost every other page points out the solution that works for 99.9% of everyone.  There's maybe one or two people that have stated that turning siri on and enabling hey siri didn't work for them and the lack of information with what their settings are makes it impossible to know if it's truly not fixing their issue or if it's something else.

Ultimately the two solutions that work are:

    - with ios 9.1, turn siri on, enable hey siri.  done.

    - if you want to sign up for a beta account (free) you can and then you can install ios 9.2 beta on your ipad pro, and everyone that's done that hasn't seen the issue recur.

It is disconcerting for the ipad pro to not turn on initially, and thankfully you found this forum for which you have now learned that you can do 1 of two things to fix it, or if you don't want do do either of those, just do the hard restart (hold home + the power button down UNTIL the apple logo appears).  It's generally a 15-20 second fix once a day then because you're just restarting the ipad, no harm, no foul.

Apple stated that they're researching the issue so that they can fix the problem and they explained how to do the hard restart.

You can fix it by turning on siri, and enabling hey siri.  Also, apple has a sign up page to become a beta tester to try out their beta software.

I had 2 issues with the iPad Pro; Hard reset after charging and the faulty display where there is a single line of a dead pixel which comes and goes.  I had the iPad Pro replaced and this one doesn't have the hard reset issue or the display.  So, I am not sure if this is a software issue or the hardware issue. Either way, my 3 trip to the Apple store to talk to the Genius about the issues I was having, they all claim that they have never heard of these issues which is very odd or maybe they are told not recognize the issue.

Yes, Apple has responded, they responded a week ago.  Many of us on this thread in our posts have stated and provided links to Apple's response.  The response being that they are now investigating it, and that the current temporary solution is to do a hard restart.  The problem shouldn't be a big deal because your ipad pro isn't dead, it's an issue with the screen turning on and waking from sleep after a 100% charge.  If you're having a battery charging issue where when you go to hard restart and the no charge indicator shows up, then you need to exchange the ipad pro because that's a defective unit, and that's not what we're discussing in this thread.  This thread is about hitting a 100% charge and then having the screen remain in a state of hibernation until a hard restart.

The genius bar is just the same as any other job.  Some people are in it because they need to make money, others do it because they love helping people.  The people in it to make money have the skills to fix things, but they don't have the passion to research issues and expand their personal knowledge beyond the generic faq's or technical bulletins.  The passionate genius's will take the time to research the hear-say and know what the problems are and potential fixes.

Just have to cross your fingers that you get a passionate genius, and not a career genius.

As an aside, I had a faulty lithium battery when they were doing the bloating and exploding.  When apple announced that they'd replace it for free for anyone that had purchased a macbook pro within the 3 years that they were using those batteries I took mine in for replacement.  I had to argue with the "genius" there for 5 minutes because "he had no knowledge of any corporate policy regarding that".  Of course that was during the dark days of the Browett retail stores so...  Eventually I had another genius come out and immediately swap out the battery throwing a quick disgusted look at the other one because of the lack of knowledge on their part.

Like I said, hope for a passionate genius and not a career one when you're talking with them.

    Hi.

    Can someone confirm:

    1. updating to iOS 9.2

    2. turning off "Hey Siri"

    3. and charging up to 100%

no longer causes the iPad Pro to freeze?

I'm hoping someone will be able to confirm by tomorrow?

I haven't hit the issue after charging once to 100%, but I had "Hey Siri" on ... I normally don't use Siri ...

I'm testing that right now.  I've got ios 9.2 installed now, and turned off hey siri.  Letting it sit there.  it had a 92% charge, and I plugged it in a while ago, going to let it sit for about 4 hours and then will check it again.  Everyone using the beta didn't have the issue, so I doubt there's an issue, but thought I'd test this anyhow.

I'm using my original charger and cable as well btw, to see that that doesn't matter.

It'll be a few hours before I know.  Seems like it always locked up after about 3-4 hours of being at 100% without the hey siri enabled.  I need to test with the volume down and mute enabled as well as those seemed to cause it to lock up to.

Let me know if I'm wrong, but I thought the counsel in earlier threads was to turn on hey Siri, not turn it off. I had hey Siri disabled when my problem occurred, so that is not the cure.

The advice that you're thinking of is for ios 9.1.  IOS 9.2 was released today and there are some of us that are working on testing with the finalized release to see if all the temporary solutions that we turned to fix the issue can be turned off.   No one should take it at face value that ios 9.2 will fix all the problems.  The hope is that it does since most people who installed the beta resolved all their issues, but the final release can be different from the beta so it's always good to test and make sure before pronouncing the issue resolved.  If the issue is still there, then we have to continue to voice the problem so the actual issue is fixed.  The thought is that it's a software issue with IOS 9.1 and always has been.  (If your ipad isn't charging at all and is blinking a dead battery symbol, then that's a different issue and possibly an actual hardware issue)  98% of the people posting in this thread though are having this issue, the rest being hardware defects, or not related at all.  So the testing being done is to re-assure those 98% that 9.2 really does fix the issue.

Understood. I, too, have downloaded 9.2 and am hoping it resolves. My issue is not hardware.

Well 3 hours after reaching 100% charge, having not touched it at all, pressing the home button and screen pops up fine.  Going to try the mute and volume all the way down tonight when I charge it, but so far so good.

IOS 9.2, ipad pro 128GB / lte, siri on, hey siri off, volume at 15%, bluetooth on.  100% charge, no activity and plugged in for 3 hours after reaching 100% charge, immediate wake up from sleep when home button pushed.
