Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

Well, just in case all of you have been holding your breath for the real "fix" -- which we were and are hoping to be iOS 9.2 -- Here is Apple's statement regarding the current situation --excuse the large type -- it was a copy and paste thing -- but read the bottom line in blue -- it will make you blue!! That being said, so far my iPad pro is working fine -- but who knows!!! Rudy

If your iPad Pro stops responding and the screen is black

Learn what to do if your iPad Pro doesn't respond when you press buttons or tap on the screen, and the screen is black.

To get back to using your iPad Pro, force restart it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Updating your iPad Pro to iOS 9.2 or later might prevent this issue from occurring in the future.

It's not really that big of a deal for them to put that caveat in.  iPad Pro fixes were not a part of the IOS 9.2 feature set, just a happy by-product.  Since it's been being tested for much longer than the ipad pro has been on the market then it's obvious that they would say it may fix it, but hasn't been put out specifically to fix that issue.

No harm, no foul, just a way for them to let people understand that this release may hold a fix, but wasn't specifically created for that purpose.  Given the fact that some people with ipods, iphones, and other ipads (mini, etc.) were seeing a similar problem then we may as well figure that it wasn't an iPad pro hardware issue but a software issue.  Given the huge hype and release surrounding the ipad pro, we're the ones seeing the problem and voicing it since there was a huge 2.5M+ rush on the product, whereas others may not have voiced that concern since their products were working for quite a while before.  Thus, the release statement that it "may" fix the problem makes sense.

I have an ipad mini and was having the same problem. Since I downloaded 9.2 I have not had the problem and I hope it remains fixed. If I charged my mini in airplane mode do a hard restart was easy; however, if I did not put it in airplane mode the restart took a while. The Hey Siri method had not fixed the problem for me. I am glad for all of the suggestions on the forum and also for the update.

    Hi varchar and Graeme S,

    I partially agree with you.

But it is not only the iPad Pro issue which makes me angry. Under iOS 9.1, there was a Mail-bug for POP3-accounts ("this email could not loaded from server" (or similar message)) causing many mails to vanish from my iPad. And "El Capitan" on OS X prevented almost all my AU-Plugins (Audio Units Plugins for Logic Pro X) to be loaded correctly.

Therefore two basic functions were faulty. And in addition, my new iPad was dead every morning. Hence I lost my love to Apple! They are launching a lot of new features (to increase the sales) but thereby many old features are destroyed because there is no time to test them sufficiently before pushing these new product (or software features) to the market. - But I agree that this is a common phenomenon today also in other companies. UNFORTUNATELY!!!

Installed ios9.2 yesterday and charged overnight.  Took it off charge at 100% and all is good.

No SIRI as I have never had it turned on. I don't like SIRI so whatever the issue was it appears to have gone away as a result of installing ios 9.2.

So I installed 9.2 and I am still not seeing my iPad Pro backup automatically to iCloud.  Initially I thought that this was solved, but it's been 2 nights on the charger with no backup.  Same issue I was having - not locked, no backup.  So I can't say this is fixed.

My suggestion would be to create a new thread about the backups not working.  You started this thread about a charge and then black screen.  That's where this entire thread has been focused.  It's pretty much like saying my engine's not running on a car, then getting that fixed then saying, the problem's not fixed because now my left rear tire won't stay inflated.

Also you need to provide more information.  i.e. "My backups aren't running after I installed IOS 9.2 on my ipad pro lte 128GB, wifi off, bluetooth off, siri off, hey siri off, airplane mode on, not signed into icloud, router is a netgear ws360, internet is time warner 1mbps..."

Just saying something like "My backups don't work" doesn't help anyone, and won't get any response from a company that's focused on hundreds of other things.  I can guarantee that any developer that sees a statement without anything to help them replicate the problem or delve into the problem with some specific settings will just look at that and assume you've not set something up right, or don't know how to use the product...

Also the title of the thread that you started was:

Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Pretty sure we can all say that this issue based on the title alone is now fixed with IOS 9.2.  Those of us that have been helping troubleshoot this have run multiple tests utilizing tons of different settings to attempt to replicate the problem back onto IOS 9.2 without success, showing that IOS 9.2 does indeed fix the problem as outlined in the title of the thread.

I'm not saying you're not having a problem, just trying to point out that if you want help, you will get more by focusing a thread on that problem so others can find it via searching, news outlets can pick up on it via searching, and Apple will pick up on it by seeing it as a thread vs having to hunt through hundreds of messages in a thread that has nothing to do with that.  The very first post that you started this thread with had nothing to do with backups failing, and the title has nothing about backups in it.  That's all I'm saying.  I definitely hope you can get that fixed, or that you can bring it to someone at Apple's attention, just do it in a way that brings visibility to it, and provide information to those people who could help you.

I know what this thread is for.  I started the thread.  I noticed that when my iPad DIDN'T freeze, the backup didn't happen.  I have posted this.  My iPad either froze requiring a hard reset, or it started up if the back up failed.  I am posting my findings since 9.2 was installed.

Yep, I noted that you started the thread in my reply.

Also as a note, my backup has been running every day through icloud.  No lockups, no freezes.  I've tested with 6 of the most prominent settings that people have posted in this thread as causing a lockup and haven't had any issues with lockups/freezing on charge.

If your ipad pro's not backing up, you should take it to a genius bar and see if they can help you sort out any icloud issues you might be having to see if that's the cause of the failed backups.

My point is that the black screen on full charge is resolved.  Create a new thread about the backups not working as that's most likely a different issue.  Enabling and disabling the backups was proven to have no effect on the tons of other people here that were having the screen lockup issue on full charge.

I get your point, I was just noting that my experience this has not been fixed as it behaves like it did prior to 9.2.  If the backup continues to fail I will get that checked out.  In the mean time, manual backups continue to work.  It's just the overnight one, while charging which is failing.

Haven't looked to see if mine is backing up or not.  Happy just to see the blank screen issue fixed by 9.2.  Will have to check that now.
