Q: No wi-fi detected on my MacBookPro

Hello

My mac does not detect any Wi-Fi device on my MacBookPro running Yosemite.

It all begun when i had to open my Mac and replace its MC024LL / A DC JACK POWER BOARD.

because it was burning my MacSafe power adapters (had burned 2 of them before deciding to open the mac).

when i started my Mac again after the fix i realized:

1-The 8 LED-dots showing the amount of charged battery on the side were not working anymore

2-When i close the screen the Mac does not go to sleep anymore

3-The wi-fi (i had Mavericks before installing Yosemite) was showing an "x" and saying there was not wi-fi device active

4-When i boot my mac in Recovery mode, still no Wi-Fi working

tried every possible solution like:

-resetting PRAM,

-resetting SCM,

-canceling the Apple.com.Airport/... files from preferences

-formatting the OS

-calling the Apple support and being told there must be a "hardware problem", so then:

-replacing the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth board with a new one,

(https://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-Unibody-Early-2011-Airport-Blue tooth-Board/IF161-083-1)

-replacing the Flex Cable connecting the Board to the motherboard,

but still no wi-fi working.

Now, after formatting and re-isntalling OSX with Yosemite, i noticed that the wi-fi hardware is not even detected in the system report,

neither does in the Air-port utility or in Network in the system preferences.

Does anyone knows what could be the solution to this ?

Thanx a lot in advance,,,,!

Early 2011 15" MacBookPro, same problem. WiFi: No hardware installed in light grey and "x" in the menubar. I am curious wether replacing the airport card will solve the issue or not. It's not that expensive so I might give that a go. But this really seems to be a known issue for the 2011 MacBook Pros. Maybe they just get too hot and fry the WiFi chips over time? Well, the stats are only known to Apple, so we'll never know.

@MMasonx how has your case evolved? Any news?

You write you also replaced this cable. So I really don't know what else you could do. I'd be very interested to learn how this cased turned out. Did you hit an Apple Service Point?

I'm still going to leave the solution that worked in my case, for documentations sake: In my case Airport chip (responsible for WiFi and Bluetooth) was not at fault. The cable that connects the airport chip to the mainboard was broken. I replaced that cable and am back to working state.

Cable part-number for this cable for the 15" MacBook Pro early 2011 - late 2012 is: 821-1311-A

The part-number can vary slightly and the cable costs ~30$. Replacement is simple. It's making sure which part is damaged, that is the difficult part here. In most cases would either be the airport card or this cable.
