If you old Mac is a non retina or and early 2013 and older, you can take out the internal storage drive, install it into an enclosure and connect it to your new MBP via USB. This should allow you to see the data and trnsfer it to the new MBP ot the 1 TB external drive.
Ciao.

Nov 13, 2015 11:18 AM in response to OGELTHORPEby AlphaWolfZ,Ah thank you. I already have a few files(200GB) in the hd, would that impact anything. Can I make 2 different backups from different laptops on the same hard drive?

Nov 13, 2015 11:39 AM in response to AlphaWolfZby OGELTHORPE,Yes to your questions. These answers are on the Pondini web site:
Personally, I prefer one HDD dedicated strictly for Time Machine for one MBP. That drive also should not have any other data on it. Based on what you have indicated, you should have three HDDs per my recommendations. However there are always other opinions and often financial issues that require compromises. In the end, you make the decisions.
Ciao.
