I'd just like to express my surprise and disappointment that there is no optical out on Apple TV 4th Gen. I thought I would just remove my old one and plug in the new one. No better than Google Chrome. No 5.1 surround for me.

I'd just like to express my surprise and disappointment that there is no optical out on Apple TV 4th Gen. I thought I would just remove my old one and plug in the new one. What brilliant mind at Apple decided that this optical port wasn't important? All surround formats flow freely through the optical. I know I could buy a HDMI splitter, but not all digital surround formats are supported on them. Why did they do this? Why break something that was fixed?I just sent mine back. I'll have to stick with the 3rd Gen TV.

We have no idea why Apple does anything that they do.

I Could be mistaken but I thought I heard that optical does not support 7.1 audio? If true that would explain the removal of an antiquated piece of the hardware...

What I did with the new Apple TV is connect it via HDMI to my TV, then connect the optical cable to the TV's optical out port. End result I believe is the same - sound via the surround system, video via the TV.

I Have same problem, my 2nd gen Apple TV is connected to surround sound via optical and is connected to tv and mac pc. Alls good and works fine. New 4th gen doesn't have optical so I'm not sure how it will all connect and work.and hdmi splitter is used for Mac and tv,
