Q: 2012 Macbook pro crashing multiple times a day

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that is crashing multiple times a day. The screen flickers with weird boxes that seemingly show smaller versions of segments of other active windows. The flickering part happens all the time and doesn't seem to cause any problems other than that, but I'm sure it's not unrelated as both issues started around the same time. I do have a dual monitor setup and the flickering happens on both monitors. The mac does seem to crash more often if I'm watching videos in a browser such as on Youtube. My browser is Firefox, 42.0 and is up to date, if that helps.

Also more recently occasionally parts of windows will change to pink, attached is a screen shot of when this just happened as I wrote this.screen.png

I'm running on OS X El Capitan, Version 10.11.1. I have 413GBs of 500 free and 8GBs of RAM that I don't think is being taxed.

I've tried looking up a few solutions: and tried things such as OnyX and AVG AntiVirus but they haven't seemed to help. Any ideas? :(

Here is the error code from the most recent crash

Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.. It appears that there are GPU problems with the MBP.  Bring the kernel panic report with you.

Rid your MBP of Antivirus.OnAccess.  You do not need it and you run the risk of it corrupting your MBP.

    Ciao.

Unfortunately where I live there are no Apple Stores. I believe the nearest one is a plane ride away.

You may contact Apple and make arrangements to ship your MBP to them.

    Ciao.

    Sorry, I know I'm being a pain.

My warranty is up, when I bought this MBP I was working full time, but now I'm a full-time student and I'm positive I can't afford whatever the repair fee will be (also, losing my computer during the last few weeks of the semester is going to make my final reports near impossible). As much as I hate to ask this: is this a problem I can live with for the time being. Or is ignoring this going to cause serious problems to my MBP?

To be blunt, If you do not have the money to have it repaired, you will have to live with it.  Will it get worse, that is hard to say.  I would suggest that you avoid videos which may give you more time to study.  That is a good thing, yes?

"My browser is Firefox, 42.0 and is up to date, if that helps"

I had an unprecedented crash almost as soon as the 42.0 update. Yosemite on Mac Mini 2.

A youTube video suddenly started displaying random vertical colored bars, almost looking like a test-pattern or something, the video still running but quite obscured in most places by these bars. I was in Full-screen mode at the time. Sound was normal.

Didn't respond to Force Quit. Then it went black. 'Shades' screen-dimmer floating window only thing working. One of the most bizarre freezes I've ever seen on a Mac.

I say unprecedented as this is the first time a hardware shutdown failed. I wouldn't have thought that was even theoretically possible. Tried again, and finally it turned off. Haven't fired up Firefox since, and have had no such problem. Safari is my usual browser anyway.

    grey-frog--

You have experienced a Page fault in the Mac OS X kernel, typically a reference to memory you do not own. The problem occurred in system calls called by graphics programs.

The Mac OS X kernel does not fail in this way -- but you are not running the standard Mac OS X kernel, as you have added several invasive extensions that may be making it unstable:

    com.avg.Antivirus.OnAccess.kext   2015.0

    com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver   4.1.46f67

Third-party so called "anti-Virus" programs are dangerous. They provide no benefit whatsoever to the user. They can make your Mac unstable, they can undermine the much better anti-Virus features already included in Mac OS X, and they can give you the feeling that you are protected.

You are NOT protected, and you must remain skeptical since the actual threats on a Mac are not invasion by unseen Viruses, but scams that dupe you into cooperating to install Trojan Horse additions to your system that compromise it.

You may also have a graphics problem, but you would first have to remove those Items and see if the problem recurs in un-modified kernel.

    22danR--

Since the title of this thread is "MacBook Pro crashing several times a day", and you do not have a MacBook Pro or necessarily the EXACT problem the original Poster describes, you would be better served starting a new Thread, with a Title of your own choosing, to attract the Readers you hope can help you solve your (somewhat different) crashing problem.

If you are getting a kernel panic, please post the log from the latest one.

If it is any other kind of panic, please post no more than the first page of the report -- those reports go on forever and most of it is only helpful to the Application Developer.

I don't have a problem. I have a potential workaround to his. He might miss an opportunity to do something in the interim, had I posted a comment The problem he describes alludes to FF 42.0, and I had a near identical problem, every time I opened up FF 42.0, and following right on the heels of the update, and may be consonant across many models; and something similar has been happening with the 42.0 update.

That doesn't mean you are necessarily mistaken about his possibly having a kernel panic, only that his main problem is getting quick control of his machine back so that he can do his studying.

*... had I posted a comment elsewhere. With his problem, he alludes to his Firefox 42.0 browser, right at the outset.
