Mac does not recognize 64gb sd card

Running Yosemite 10.10.5 on MacBook Pro

My MAC does not recognize my 64GB SanDisk Extreme SD card. The card works in my Sony camera.

My MAC recognizes my 16GB SanDisk Extreme SD cards (but not the 64GB)

When I put the card into the SD card slot on the MacBook - nothing happens.

When I put the card into a card reader and insert that into the USB slot the MAC offers to reformat the card as a 1 MB card.

Apple support says "go to the Apple menu, select About this Mac..., click on More info" but "More Info" does not appear as an option.

What do I do to use the card?

Depending on what year your Mac the card reader is SD or SDHC therefore limited to 32 GB of capacity

Later models have a SDXC card reader with much larger capacity.

SD and SDHC media will work in an SDXC card reader or camera but SDXC cards will only work in an SDXC reader
