Safari can't open page, server isn't responding

I intermittently (a few times a day) get an error from Safari that it cannot open a page because the server isn't responding (shown below):

Safari can’t open the page “https://www.google.com/search? client=safari&rls=en&q=supersymmetry &ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8” because the server where this page is located isn’t responding.

I believe the problem started when I upgraded to El Capitan. Most often this is when I enter a query in the address bar, and Safari reports that Google is not responding. I have also noticed that YouTube occasionally fails to load. I have only noticed it with these two sites, so maybe something related to Google (IPv6 maybe?). If I wait 20-30 seconds and click the reload icon in the address bar then the page loads as expected.

This does not happen with the Chrome browser and does not affect any other devices on our home wifi (two iPhones, iPad, and a PC are all fine). I have cleared my history in Safari and cleared the DNS cache. I have rebooted the laptop, our cable modem, and our router (AirPort Extreme). This has been happening for several weeks. I could give up and use Chrome exclusively, but I actually kind of like Safari and would prefer to make it work.
