Restoring a jail broken device is how you remove the jailbreak. Did you try restoring the phone?

so I have the updated iTunes...that took forever...hadn't done that in awhile
I can connect the phone and attempt to restore it but I get a code 3014....doesn't recognize it

when I tried to update it before I tried to restore it...the iPhone was recognized...the serial number and type of iPhone was displayed

now i'm at a loss

Take a look at the suggestions in this support article if you haven't already done so.
If you see Error 3194, Error 17, or 'This device isn't eligible for the requested build' in iTunes - Apple Support
