Why does my Apple TV 4 lose connection to the home sharing network?

Hi,

I just got my Apple TV 4 a couple of days ago. It set up fine automatically with my iPhone but whenever it goes to sleep when it wakes up I can't reconnect to my iMac Home Sharing (where I have iTunes running). When I restart the unit it works and will connect and I can use it. Real pain to have to do that a couple of times a day. I have two 3rd gen Apple TV's and they work fine. I have tried a full reset of the unit and a manual set but now change.

Any guidance is appreciated, Lothar

Same exact issue! My entire house is on a wired network including the AppleTV (4thGen). I have these ports open - TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5342 for the IP address of the AppleTV. All Devices are on Static IPs. My main router is a NetGear NightHawkX4 which the Mac and Internet are hooked up to. The AppleTV is wired into a Airport Extreme and it's wired connection runs back up to the NightHawk. My iMac, a Late 2011 model, is running latest OS X. Home sharing is setup in iTunes.

Whenever the AppleTV is put to sleep or goes to sleep on it's own and is then turned back on it does not see Home sharing, nor does the iMac see the AppleTV. Also of note, my iPhone 6s, up to date, does not see the AppleTV after sleep mode to Airplay to.

The only way to get everything working again is to go to the Settings>System>Restart on the AppleTV. After that everything works as it should, until the AppleTV goes to sleep again.

Another thing that does not work as it should is that the AppleTV does NOT wake up my iMac for Home Sharing access even though the Wake for Network Access setting is turned on in Sys Prefs under Energy Saver.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

HI there,

My problem seemed to clear up once I logged out of my Apple ID accounts in iTunes on all my machines. IOW - I had an iMac and a MacBook that were logged into iTunes with my Apple ID. I logged out of my Apple ID on both machines and only re-logged back in iTunes on my IMac. Then I logged out and back into my 4 Gen Apple TV with my Apple ID. The problem seems to have gone away. My new Apple TV Gen 4 does not lose my home sharing connection any more.

MY ATV also does not want to connect after sleep mode. I have reset many times to establish good connection until last week my reset did not reset. So, i brought to Apple Tech in town. Tech says diagnostics did not find anything wrong with hardware but still would not connect for them either. So, his solution was to use usb-c port on back of ATV and connected to ITunes and restored the software for the ATV, this seemed to work And the tech said it was a software issue.

So its been a week now, and the same thing is happening again. I am really wondering what the heck is going on.

I KNOW my network is good, other media players connected to the same network are not showing any problems. Only the ATV 4 is having issues with connecting to the network after waking from Sleep mode.

I Cannot rely on it anymore and am choosing to just use my other media players and use ATV 4 for mirroring from my device, because it seems to be fine on the internal network, outside connection is not reliable.

if anyone has suggestions for settings on router, i would appreciate it. I have Comcast rental modem with Voice and none of my multiple other devices have any issues, only the ATV 4

Hi, is this a Home Sharing problem? If not, you might try a new question with your exact problem. Also, there are several threads already on this issue of dropping network conmection after sleep. You could try searching for them.

If ATV is on WiFi, check that your network is using only WPA2-AES (CCMP), with no dual-mode or TKIP. This has helped some users. Also, it helps if your 2.4 and 5 GHz networks have different SSIDs, so ATV can explicitly connect to one of them.

Thanks for your suggestions. I do not use WiFi (not preferred for the issues and reasons you stated)

I have searched the forums and posts but none specifically address the ATV4 when waking from sleep mode on Ethernet only. I am suspecting my Gateway/Modem to be the culprit here. But I still think it odd that only the ATV4 is giving me issues because I also have an ATV3 (basement) that has never had any issue.

ATV 3 and 4 have completely different software, so they can have different problems.

You should look in your router logs for clues. If you're using DHCP, you'll see that ATV 4 seems to renew its DHCP lease at random times, sometimes within a minute. Your router may object to this behavior and deny the connection. You might try WiFi and see if it works better.

Currently, I have the Comcast Gateway/Modem handling DHCP along with telephony. I think that is the problem.

SO, my next step is to purchase my own SB6183 Surfboard modem, have the Apple Extreme TC handle DHCP, do away with telephony, (Comcast requires their Gateway Modems for Telephony), and see how it works.

I have another home that uses Charter, and I have never had any problem with Charter. Another reason to dislike Comcast for their cheap equipment and silly rules.

Thanks for sharing your info on the DHCP lease times, I think that is what Comcast is objecting too.

I aleady have tried both Ethernet and WiFi and ineither were reliable and why i brought to Apple Store in the first place. The software became corrupted somehow. It has to be the Comcast modem, etc..and the intermittent lease requests or poor consistency. Now, i cant explain any more deeper than that was just a hunch.

THe following article played a key part in my choosing the Arris SB 6190 The discussion on channel bonding is quite intersting and makes me future proof.

Thanks for your help Diana! As of today i have been running this new modem without any issues and i also picked up the Ooma VOIP to replace the telephony part of my Comcast modem. Comcast requires you to use their modem and rental if you bundle phone and internet. Their modem is poorly rated according to the article above.

This doesn't work. I've had my ATV4 for 6 hours and it don't work. I've done what you said signed out of all the iTunes on my iPhone, iMac and still it won't allow me to access the computer when it's asleep. What good it this? Why do apple release products that don't work? Apple should reimburse my money until they fix the problem. This product is not fit for purpose.
