Q: mail: no windows

Mail now does not "do" windows and normal menu options like 'preferences' and 'new message' are all greyed out. Couldn't use time machine as hard disk corrupted [coincidentally] and had to be reformatted.

Are mail contacts and recipients still accessible somehow?

    Hello december29,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that when you try and open Mail on your Mac, you are not seeing any window.  To get started, I suggest that you do a safe open of the Mail app:

    • Open Mail and immediately hold the Shift key until Mail opens. This causes Mail to open without any message or mailbox selected.

    Take care.

Thanks for your reply - problem is more than stated above actually - have upgraded to El Capitan but unfortunately did not take 'rebuild mailbox' option at appropriate moment, and, like under Yosemite, opening Mail causes immediate systemwide freeze with only mouse cursor working and huge erratic cpu usage.

    Hi there,

Thanks for providing more information.  I suggest that you next remove all email accounts from the Mail application.  You can accomplish this by accessing your Internet Accounts in the System Preferences.

To open this pane, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Internet Accounts.

    Remove button

To remove the highlighted account and turn off all its features, click the Remove button .

OS X El Capitan: Internet Accounts preferences

    Cheers.

If Mail is freezing/crashing, try what is below.

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

    Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

Information learned from Linc Davis. Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Apologies resorting to workaround i.e. webmail only - neither suggestion above worked & anytime Mail.app is even thought about, there's a complete systemwide freeze - Can probably live without pop3 at least for now. Thanks to Alex and Eric for assistance.
