Q: Iphone 5 boot loop

Hello,

This morning i was heading to my car, with my phone at 100% battery, operating perfectly fine as it normally does. I get into my car, and right before i plug my phone into my multimedia interface in the car, i notice something ominous and unusual, it has randomly rebooted, displaying the white background with the black apple logo. I found this to be odd, but only to become even more concerned, as within the next five seconds it displayed the "low battery" screen. Once I unplugged it from my car, i found that the phone's screen would not even power on. Once the phone is connected to a charger, in any situation (wall, car, or computer) it performs this torturous and utterly annoying boot loop, displaying low battery then the reboot screen.

AppleCare expired a year or two ago, so that is not an option. I've attempted every button combination to attempt to bypass the boot loop. I was able to boot the phone into recovery mode, in which my computer recognized it to be in that state, but after about 45 seconds of going through the restore process I receive an error message "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4005).

I tried updating itunes, gave the whole restore process a couple shots again too with no change in fate.

The phone has never been jailbroken, never had any problem(s), never had any repairs done.

Is this the end of my iPhone 5? Please assist me.

Thank you.

iPhone 5, iOS 9.1, no repairs ever done

    Greetings mattny98,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

From your post, I see that your iPhone 5 has started to display some unusual behavior by shutting off, restarting itself, and displaying a low battery percentage when it was full before. I know that you have a very frustrating and concerning issue going on with your iPhone, but we are here to help.

You did complete some great troubleshooting and provided some good information in your post to help us understand the issue. To continue the troubleshooting process, I suggest working through the steps outlined for this alert located in the following article.

If you see error 9, 4005, 4013, or 4014 when you restore your iOS device

When you try to update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you might see one of these messages in iTunes.

If your iOS device disconnects during the update or restore or if iTunes couldn't tell the device to restore, you might see one of these messages:

    • The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9).
    • The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4005).
    • The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4013).
    • The iPhone [device name] could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4014).

Try these steps to restore your iOS device:

    1. Install the latest version of iTunes.
    2. Restart your computer.
    3. Check for updates to your Mac or PC. If you restart your computer for an update, check for updates again after you restart.
    4. Try to restore your device using another USB cable.
    5. Try to restore your device on another computer.
    6. Force your device to restart

If you continue to see error 4005, 4013, or 4014 when you try to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, contact us.
